Frances, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I opened my business doors almost twenty years ago, during a time when big-name companies were going out of business. I had lost my job, we had two babies, and we had just purchased a home. It was intimidating, but my fear of never trying my hand at business was greater than my fear of starting a business and not succeeding. I used the resources I had and opened my business. Since then, it has been awarded multiple times. I’m glad I never gave up.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was absolutely not an easy road! Balancing family and work was a challenge. Additionally, building a salon team that was professional, supportive, and talented took time. Having a strong team that aligns with your business vision and goals creates a solid foundation for everyone, including clients and future opportunities.

Salon 403 is located in Newport News, Virginia, and specializes in healthy hair care for all textures. Our experienced stylists focus on natural hair care, precision cutting, hair color, hair extensions, and more. Additionally, I’ve created a natural hair care line, Pheme Natural Hair Care, and a makeup line, Ella René Cosmetics. I also work with several clients who have medical-related hair loss conditions.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to be still and listen twice and speak once. Every business opportunity that presents itself is not always a good opportunity. Research everything.
