Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Ter Borg.
Hi Julie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From an early age, I was inspired by my family’s creative pursuits—my father was both a science teacher and artist, my grandmothers sewed, and my mother expressed creativity through gardening and baking. Though I became a scientist, I continue to craft and create joy to myself and others.
I’ve experimented with sewing, painting, pottery, felt work, and crochet. Switching mediums sparks creativity, but I always return to jewelry for its delicate precision.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My business journey has been full of ups and downs, each offering valuable lessons. For years, jewelry making was a hobby—I sold on Etsy and at craft shows. After my designs were featured on TV, I turned my passion into a career, opening a shop and featuring/supporting other artisans. Though managing both the business and handmade creations was tough, I discovered my true preference: staying in the workshop and creating.
I am currently dedicated to crafting pieces inspired by nature, which can be displayed in shops nationwide.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make jewelry inspired by nature, using pressed local flowers in resin to highlight natural colors. Creating pieces that reflect the shapes and hues of plants and animals brings me joy. I’m proud of my unique designs, their appeal across ages, and my ongoing growth as I try new techniques.
Working with beads, gemstones, felt, and natural materials consistently presents creative challenges and serves as a rewarding outlet for my artistic expression.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Exploring acres of farmland with my beagle was a highlight of my childhood. We followed streams, hunted crayfish, and picked wildflowers. Those peaceful moments in nature shaped my lifelong love for dogs, the outdoors, and solitude.
Even as an adult, I turn to nature to recharge and experience tranquility.
