Meet Maya Hairston of Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Hairston.

Hi Maya, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always had a love for handbags and built quite a collection over the years, most of them coming from stores like Ross and Marshalls. While I admired luxury handbags, I wasn’t always in a position to afford the high price tags that came with them. Unfortunately, affordable options often meant sacrificing quality.

That experience is what inspired the creation of LabeledLex — a brand designed to bridge the gap between affordability and quality. Over the past three years, I’ve worked tirelessly to grow the brand, reaching customers in 10 different states. Since then, we’ve expanded beyond handbags into products for kids, men, and apparel as well.

Our goal is to continue growing LabeledLex into a recognized worldwide brand while staying true to the vision it was founded on: stylish, quality products at accessible prices.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building a brand has definitely not been a smooth or straight road. Being based in a small town has created challenges when it comes to expanding our reach and gaining exposure. On top of that, running a one-person business can often feel overwhelming, as I’ve had to manage every aspect of the brand on my own.

Another challenge has simply been learning the overall process of owning and operating a business while trying to ensure everything is done the right way. Although the journey has come with obstacles, each challenge has helped me grow stronger as both a business owner and a person.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In addition to entrepreneurship, I also work professionally in housing education and community development as the Director of Resident Education for the Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority. I specialize in housing counseling, financial education, and creating programs that help individuals and families build stability and long-term success. My work often includes community workshops, youth education initiatives, grant management, and program development.

I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to build LabeledLex from the ground up while balancing a full professional career and serving my community. Over the last three years, the brand has grown to reach customers in multiple states, and seeing people genuinely connect with something I created has been incredibly rewarding. I’m also proud of the impact I’ve made through my professional work by helping people gain knowledge and resources that can positively change their lives.

What sets me apart is my ability to combine creativity, purpose, and authenticity. Whether I’m building a brand, leading community programs, or creating events and experiences, I always want people to feel inspired, seen, and valued. I’m deeply passionate about growth — not only for myself, but for the people and communities around me — and I believe that passion shows in everything I do.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Pretty random but I am deathly afraid of cats
