Today we’d like to introduce you to MICHAEL KURTZ.
Hi MICHAEL, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I became Zig Zag the Magic Man when my college juggling club met some clowns during a shared event on campus. I followed one clown around until he finally gave me his agency’s card. Soon after I was hired as Zig Zag the Clown by one of New York City’s best agencies – The Funniest Clowns in the Whole Wide World. Fast forward to today, I eventually decided to start my own business as Zig Zag the Magic Man of Funmakers. And after many years of working in the Washington D.C. area I can now say that my life is all about being a full-time Children’s Entertainer.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I see the journey as relatively smooth. The toughest year was 2020, when COVID shut down the entire entertainment industry along with most other businesses. The only way to survive for me was to work in an Amazon warehouse on my feet for 10 hours a day. It was rough. But I knew I’d be back.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
From the beginning of my training at the agency clowns had to be able to perform magic, twist balloons and paint faces. I was lucky that my mom and dad introduced me to magic and art at a young age. And over the years I realized that I could be a renaissance man by offering a wide range of entertainment options for customers to choose from. So I offer various magic variety shows, balloon art, face painting, foam parties, bubble play, cotton candy and musical games. I’m exhausted just typing the list. But mu specialty is performing various shows for young children. I get to play and have fun like one of the kids with puppets and music, magic and just being silly. I’m probably best known for the voices I add to various puppets and props. I’m proud that I am able to create so much laughter at the drop of a hat. (And one of my routines is literally dropping a hat many times while trying to get it to land on my head) What sets me apart is my natural ability to relate to children of all ages. After several years of teaching and studying comedy it has become second nature to me.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I would just like to say that I greatly appreciate all the families and businesses that have trusted me with their children’s happiness over the years. It has given my life meaning beyond words.
