Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanne Thomas.
Hi Joanne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I actually wanted to be a business owner after the beginning of motherhood. It was important for me to spend my time being an available and accessible parent while earning my own money. I finally got that opportunity after graduate school and clinical residency.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Travel to Washington, D.C. was difficult and challenging to attend in-person classes. At times, it took 2 to 2 and a half hours one way to get to the nations capital.
Other struggles were obtaining the necessary hours for clinical licensure. It was sometimes a slow process, with client cancellations and travel, to keep up my caseload.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I started an outpatient group private practice for behavioral healthcare. My passions have been play therapy of which I am now a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (RPT-S) and EMDRIA certified therapist. I also have specialized training in perinatal mental health counseling and Military-Focused training to better work with active military and veterans.
We at Play Therapy Essentially, PLLC believe in each person’s ability to change and improve their situations through the power that comes from recognizing and identifying their positive character traits. We work collaboratively with each client to assist them in reaching their goals and to help them achieve positive outcomes. There are no “cookie-cutter” interventions because each person is different. We want to empower individuals to make choices in their progress and to enhance each person’s strengths and unique abilities that will promote success.
Our Mission
Utilizing a strength-based approach to incorporate evidenced-based practices such as play therapy across the life span to address such issues as relationship conflict, family stressors, mood disorders and trauma.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The industry of behavioral healthcare, primarily in outpatient therapy is one that is always growing. What sets this practice and our clinicians apart from others is the additional education and training that we complete to offer specialized services.
