Rising Stars: Meet JOSEPH Hicks of Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to JOSEPH Hicks.

Hi JOSEPH, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Joseph Hicks, PMHNP-BC

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner – Board Certified

As a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), I provide compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care throughout the Hampton Roads region and across Virginia through both in-person and telehealth services.

My philosophy of care is simple: I treat every client the way I would want to be treated. I believe in addressing the whole person, not just the symptoms. By combining psychiatric medication management with supportive and therapeutic interventions, I provide holistic, individualized care designed to promote lasting emotional wellness and improved quality of life.

I work with children, adolescents, adults, and older adults experiencing a wide range of mental health conditions, including:

Anxiety Disorders
Depression
Insomnia and Sleep Disorders
Postpartum Depression
Perimenopausal and Postmenopausal Mood Disorders
Bipolar Disorder
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorders
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Children and Adults
Stress-Related and Adjustment Disorders

In addition, I offer marital counseling with a Christian-based approach that emphasizes forgiveness, healing, communication, and reconciliation when appropriate.

As a veteran, I possess a unique understanding of the challenges faced by service members, veterans, and their families. I am committed to providing culturally competent, compassionate care that addresses the distinctive mental health needs associated with military service.

My guiding principle is:

“Never let people, problems, or pain live rent-free in your mind.”

I am also the author of the book The Sheep in Wolves Clothing Was a Swan, available through major retailers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kindle, and Dell Digital platforms.

I am dedicated to helping individuals and families find hope, healing, and practical solutions that empower them to live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner – Board Certified

My healthcare journey began as a Registered Nurse, where I had the privilege of caring for our nation’s veterans at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Tripler Army Medical Center. These experiences instilled in me a deep appreciation for compassionate, patient-centered care and provided valuable insight into the unique mental health challenges faced by military personnel, veterans, and their families.

Today, as a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), I provide comprehensive psychiatric care throughout Hampton Roads and across Virginia through both in-person and telehealth appointments. My philosophy is straightforward: I treat every client the way I would want to be treated.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
