Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Bender.
Hi Emily, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a Nurse since 2005, a Navy Nurse for 6 of those years. I fell in love with the mother baby bond, especially assisting mother’s to feed their babies. When I got out of the Navy, I became a mother baby bedside nurse. I earned my IBCLC (international board certified lactation consultant) after many years of training and taking boards. I became Winchester Medical Center’s lactation consultant for many years. I left the hospital to start my private practice as I really enjoyed the most complicated breast-feeding scenarios, and being able to turn breastfeeding struggles into successful feedings for mother and baby. .
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been smooth, but I feel struggles are somewhat necessary and correlate to long term to success. The friction creates resistance and perspective. I lost a child and had problems with my health that ended my Naval career. When I worked at the civilian hospital, they didn’t always welcome my passion for training, which is inherent culture in the Navy. I don’t accept the status quo if I feel it’s ethically wrong. I’m not a “yes man”. That’s why I left the hospital to pursue my own path. It was the best decision to trust myself and seek my own journey untethered to a hospital environment, which is unfortunately a business first.
