Today we’d like to introduce you to Billy Boylan.
Hi Billy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up around construction and earthmoving. My dad was a Superintendent for an earthmoving company and whenever I wasn’t in school, he used to take me to work with him for as far back as I can remember. He would let me run heavy equipment everyday I was out there and I could never get enough of it. After college, I worked as a Project Manager and then a Superintendent for a bigger company. All of these different aspects gave me a good amount of experience and a well rounded knowledge of how the earthmoving industry works. Naturally, things progressed to the point I started this company when I turned 30.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I first started out, the fear of failure was a pretty constant voice in the back of my mind. That voice eventually dissipated and was replaced by confidence as the business grew.
For the first few years, I would take on pretty much any project I was able to take a swing at even if it was out of our usual service area or a type of work we don’t really specialize in. That was a necessary step in order to stay busy, but it was certainly challenging. As we’ve become more established, I would say one of the most valuable things I’ve learned is how to say “no” on certain projects or in scenarios that aren’t a good fit for us.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about High Point Earthworks LLC?
We are an excavation and grading business located in the northern Piedmont region of Virginia and our service area is primarily Fauquier, Loudoun, Clarke, and Rappahannock Counties. We perform work for residential and commercial clients for a wide variety of projects from building roads and ponds to installing all types of underground infrastructure. My main focus to set us apart from other companies has been building a very high quality product on each project with critical attention to detail.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
We are very fortunate that demand for our services will always be strong in this area. The biggest challenge we have right now and will continue to see in the future is finding and keeping talented employees. Anyone can own an excavator or a bulldozer, but the real superpower is having the right employees in place. I think the blue collar shortage has been publicized fairly well at this point for the construction and trade industries and it is real. However it evolves is definitely going to be a deciding factor in the degree of our success moving forward. To help offset some of this challenge, I try to consistently invest in the latest equipment and technology like grade control, which helps reduce manpower needs and completes the job more efficiently.
