Conversations with Shannon Andes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Andes.

Hi Shannon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Shannon Andes. I’ve always been passionate about food and combining international cuisines in ways that are familiar. I went to culinary school in Washington DC at The Art Institute. Worked in italian for about 10 years and opened a sandwich shop on VCU’s campus in RVA back in 2013. Sold that and moved to FL where I became a firefighter for a few years until I got the itch to be back in kitchens. I then moved w my partner to Manhattan where I became a chef for a large company cooking for their board members. I knew I wanted my own restaurant again and while visiting my brother in Onancock, I toured this restaurant space and my excitement grew as I thought about the possibilities. We opened mid Feb and have been so much busier than I expected.

The name Bread and Butter comes from my late grandma. You could cook her a 10 course meal with the best ingredients and she’d always say, “you know I’d be happy with just bread and butter”. There’s no other name that would fit her quite like that one.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
it’s been such a smooth ride. I still keep pinching myself to see if it’s real

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I think my specialty is plating. I wake up in the middle of the night with ingredients and how I want to put them together. I love art and I love creating something amazing on a plate

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My partner, Alexa, who helped every step of the way and Sam Burke, my sous chef who has been the other half to the amazong food that comes out of the kitchen
