Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra Zamora.
Hi Alejandra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey in the construction industry began in 2008 when I joined a commercial millwork company as an Administrative Assistant. I later advanced to the role of Estimator Assistant, supporting architects and assisting with project estimates. This experience provided a strong foundation in the construction industry and taught me the value of teamwork, planning, and attention to detail.
In 2010, I transitioned into the electrical trade as an Administrative Assistant. I quickly became fascinated by the industry and was eager to learn every aspect of the business. Over the years, I gained experience in accounting, estimating, and project management support, allowing me to develop a well-rounded understanding of electrical contracting operations.
As my knowledge and skills grew, so did my ambitions. In 2018, I partnered with a colleague to start an electrical company. That experience taught me invaluable lessons about leadership, entrepreneurship, and business ownership. Although we eventually chose to pursue separate paths, the confidence and knowledge I gained inspired me to establish my own company, DARA Electrical.
Since 2020, DARA Electrical has proudly served the community through a wide range of commercial electrical projects. Along the way, I earned my Master Electrician license through years of education, training, and hands-on experience. Building a company that serves clients while creating opportunities for others within the industry has been one of my greatest blessings.
The path has not always been easy. As a woman business owner in the traditionally male-dominated electrical industry, I have faced unique challenges. However, passion, perseverance, hard work, and years of experience have allowed me to continue growing and thriving. Today, I am fortunate to work alongside an incredible team of experienced professionals and emerging talent who are eager to learn and build successful careers. Together, we are committed to delivering exceptional service to our clients and community.
One constant throughout my life has been a commitment to staying busy, learning continuously, and serving others. When I am not running my business or spending time with my family, including my senior Yorkies, Samie and Sonie, my beloved “baby boys”. I dedicate my time to helping others. Since 2020, I have volunteered as an EMT with my local fire department. I also work PRN as an Emergency Room Technician at a well-known hospital and volunteer weekly at a wildlife rehabilitation center in Virginia. These roles reflect my passion for serving both people and animals in my community.
Most recently, I decided to pursue an additional career path as a Veterinary Technician through Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). I am currently completing my prerequisites and look forward to entering the part-time Veterinary Technology program.
If I could offer one piece of advice to aspiring business owners, it would be this: there will be moments when you feel like giving up. Every entrepreneur faces challenges, setbacks, and uncertainty. Keep moving forward, stay committed, and never lose faith in your vision. If you are passionate about what you do and willing to put in the work, you can accomplish far more than you ever imagined.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Building a business in a male-dominated industry has come with its share of challenges, and there were times when I had to work harder to prove myself and earn credibility. Starting and growing a company also required long hours, difficult decisions, financial risks, and navigating periods of uncertainty.
One of the most significant turning points in my journey was transitioning from a business partnership to building DARA Electrical on my own. While it was a challenging and sometimes intimidating experience, it gave me the opportunity to create the company I had always envisioned. Looking back, every obstacle taught me valuable lessons about resilience, leadership, adaptability, and perseverance. Those experiences not only strengthened my business but also shaped me into the person and leader I am today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
DARA Electrical has provided commercial electrical contracting services throughout the community. With over 15 years of experience in construction and electrical contracting, I specialize in a wide range of commercial electrical projects, including office, hospitality, retail, healthcare, and institutional facilities. I am known for building strong client relationships, delivering quality workmanship, and finding practical solutions to complex challenges.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I am grateful for the opportunities I have had throughout my career and for the people who have supported me along the way. From construction and electrical contracting to emergency services and wildlife rehabilitation, every experience has reinforced the importance of hard work, continuous learning, and serving others.
If there is one message I would like to leave with readers, it is this: don’t let fear, setbacks, or challenges define your future. Success is not determined by where you start, but by your willingness to keep learning, stay resilient, and continue moving forward. There will be obstacles along the way, but if you remain committed to your goals and believe in yourself, you can achieve more than you ever imagined.
