Hidden Gems: Meet Riccardo of Ricky’s Wine Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Riccardo.

Hi Riccardo, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Montecatini Terme, Italy (20 min from Florence), where my love for food and wine began at home. My father grew our produce and made olive oil and wine, teaching me that great hospitality starts with respecting ingredients, tradition, and the people around the table. After culinary school, I spent more than two decades building my career in major cities, working in high-level kitchens and Michelin-rated restaurants while refining my craft and expanding my perspective on food, wine, and hospitality.

Over time, I realized that my dream wasn’t just to cook, it was to create a place of my own. That dream led me to Williamsburg. What drew me here was the sense of community, the appreciation for local businesses, and the opportunity to build meaningful connections with guests. In a smaller town, hospitality becomes personal, and that’s something I value deeply.

Today, Ricky’s Wine Bar is the realization of that vision—a welcoming gathering place where people can enjoy exceptional Old World and New World wines, handcrafted cocktails, and thoughtfully prepared food in a relaxed setting. Located in the historic former Imperial Theatre on Prince George Street, we are proud to be part of the exciting revitalization of this growing corridor. As an extension of Duke of Gloucester Street, Prince George Street is quickly emerging as Williamsburg’s new restaurant row, with an expanding collection of dining and hospitality destinations. We are honored to contribute to that energy and growth while creating a place where locals, students, visitors, and neighbors can come together over great food, wine, and conversation.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. The hospitality industry demands long hours, hard work, and a great deal of personal sacrifice. Moving from Italy to pursue my career meant spending years away from family and missing many important moments back home. Building a career in professional kitchens requires commitment, and there were times when work came before almost everything else.

The journey to opening my own business brought its own challenges. I always knew I wanted to create something that reflected my vision and values, but getting to that point took patience, perseverance, and a willingness to take risks. There were many obstacles along the way, but I believed in what I was building and stayed focused on the long-term goal.

Looking back, those challenges helped shape who I am today. They taught me resilience, appreciation, and the importance of creating a place where people feel welcomed and connected. That makes what we’ve built at Ricky’s Wine Bar even more meaningful.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Ricky’s Wine Bar?
Ricky’s Wine Bar was born from a dream of bringing a little piece of Europe to Williamsburg while celebrating the incredible flavors, ingredients, and hospitality of the Chesapeake region. We wanted to create a destination where people can gather, connect, and enjoy exceptional food and drink in a warm, inviting atmosphere.
While wine is at the heart of what we do, Ricky’s is much more than a traditional wine bar. We offer a complete dining experience that combines thoughtfully curated wines, handcrafted cocktails, and chef-driven cuisine designed to complement and elevate one another. Our goal is to create memorable experiences through exceptional pairings, seasonal ingredients, and attentive service.
What sets us apart is the balance we strive to achieve—elevated yet approachable, sophisticated yet welcoming. Inspired by the charm and culinary traditions of Europe and grounded in the character of coastal Virginia, Ricky’s offers guests an experience that feels both unique and familiar.
Above all, we are most proud of the community we have built. Ricky’s is founded on genuine hospitality, and we are grateful for every guest who chooses to spend time with us. Whether joining us for a glass of wine, a special dinner, or a celebration with loved ones, we hope every visit reflects the passion, care, and sense of connection that inspired Ricky’s from the very beginning.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is building Ricky’s into a thriving and sustainable business that becomes a long-term part of the Williamsburg community. Success isn’t just measured by growth—it’s measured by consistency: delivering exceptional food, wine, cocktails, and hospitality every day while creating a place that guests enjoy returning to and our team is proud to be part of.
This matters because restaurants have the unique ability to bring people together. When a business becomes a trusted gathering place, it contributes to the character and vitality of a community. My goal is to build something that lasts—a business rooted in genuine hospitality that supports our team, serves our guests well, and contributes to the continued growth and energy of Williamsburg for years to come.
