Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Lavinder.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After serving many years in the US Coast Guard, I decided to use my CPA license to start an accounting firm, Guardian Solutions CPA. Guardian Solutions began in 2022 after trying to find some part time tax prep jobs that didn’t work out. During that first year I completed a few 1040 returns and I was able to better understand the services we would offer. I met many successful accountants that year, but one stood well above the rest and shared with me a group of accountants who specialized in small business tax and accounting. Additionally, in the Coast Guard I was able to work on a new financial management system implementation. It was long days and a lot of problem, but I imagined that was how start-up culture would be and so I decided that when I separated from the Coast Guard, I wanted to try entrepreneurship!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Small business ownership is not for the faint of heart. The biggest challenge is that economics matter when you are small business owner. So when you have an employee that isn’t performing, or a position that is no longer needed, you have to take action. That often means that means parting ways with a good person in a bad role. I had to get better as having tough conversations.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are 100% focused on serving small business owners. I find that our best clients that we have the greatest impact with are small business owners, and we are able to help them improve their profit and reduce their tax liability. Today, we serve over 40 business owners and ensure each month they are keeping up with their numbers, getting everything filed on time, and provide solid guidance and advice as they wear many different hats!
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I have many positive childhood memories, but I think getting a go-kart at the age of 6 is very vivid. I would ride it in a loop in our backyard and I just remember trying to go faster each lap. While I was never destined to be a professional race car driver, this was my earliest memory of trying to improve performance. From there, I always wanted to improve everything I was a part of.
