Today we’d like to introduce you to Dianna Taylor.
Hi Dianna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a full-time teacher, I never had much time to explore my creativity. The year after Covid, however, I needed a positive outlet.
I asked a friend and artist to help me get started with watercolor, and once she taught me the basics, I was painting hours each day. Never before had I found a hobby that made time disappear completely.
I knew I wanted to focus on architecture since that’s always been a side interest of mine. I posted one image on a community page, and I’ve never stopped getting orders since that April, 2022.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been mostly smooth, for which I’m very thankful. My biggest struggle is keeping my Christmas orders at a reasonable amount—which I have yet to do. Every year it’s stressful, and I spend a lot of time away from family getting the portraits done.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work is focused around architectural portraits. I use watercolor, gauche, and some pen to create a colorful, realistic, yet playfully imperfect, portrait.
I’m proud of the life I give my paintings. I use a lot of color, and I include the tiny details that many wouldn’t have noticed.
What matters most to you?
To me, giving someone a gift that they’re able to feel joy from for years to come, even if that building is no longer standing, matters the most. I can keep physical structures “alive” indefinitely. It’s important and provides nostalgia and memories.
