Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex James.
Hi Alex, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first learned how to work on cars from my father as a young kid and grew up loving to work on cars. During highschool I worked in a couple different auto repair shops doing basic stuff. After graduating highschool I went to Universal Technical Institute in Orlando, Fl, an Automotive repair program, and I received a certificate from that program. Upon graduating I moved back home to Leesburg, VA and started working in a Nissan dealership. Over the next few years I worked in a couple different dealerships. After awhile of bouncing around between a few places and other jobs, I started working for a mobile brake repair company and worked for them for many years. After leaving there I started working for myself by doing some gig type of work and also posted my mobile brake services on Craigslist. I did that for a couple of years and then one day I just decided to start a legit mobile brake service company. So on march 27, 2025 I formed my company, Brake Knights, LLC.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In all honesty, starting the company has been pretty smooth and haven’t faced any big challenges. Even after getting it started and began to build the business it has also been pretty smooth. That might be because I have a lot of experience in this field and learned a lot about the mobile brake business from the company I previously worked for. The most challenging and somewhat stressful parts have been operating the business as a solo operator with no employees and continuing to build the business. It is tough at times, but it’s worth building something that you own 100% of.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a mobile brake service that goes to the customer’s location to service their vehicle’s brakes. That’s the only service we offer and specialize in it. I think it says a lot about companies that specialize in one thing and are really good at it. Our brake service compared to taking it to a shop to get your brakes done is a night and day difference. Not only are our prices competitive or even slightly cheaper than most shops, but the time we save our customers by coming to them and completing the service in an hour or two is a great value. They can be at work and getting their brakes fixed at the same time. Another thing that sets us apart and I’m most proud of, is our quality of work and most importantly our honesty and integrity. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone out to a customer after them being told by another shop that their brakes need to be changed and I inspect them and they are completely fine and don’t need to be replaced yet. I would much rather not do the job and save that person hundreds of dollars, but gain their trust and become a customer for life. Our brand identity is built on what we call “The Knights Code”; Trust, Honor, and Integrity. These values guide how I run this business and serve every customer.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was an outgoing energetic kid that loved to be active and doing fun things. I grew up playing a lot of different sports and also bow hunted deer on our property. I also learned early on when I was around 12 that I had the entrepreneurial bug, because I like most young kids started their own lawn mowing business and had a few neighbors I would mow their lawn. I experienced what it was like to work for yourself and make your own money and it stuck with me ever since. Ever since then I have always tried new businesses and never stopped thinking about what business I am going to build, and now I have finally made that dream come true, and I’m just getting started.
