Today we’d like to introduce you to Marysa Uwejeyan.
Hi Marysa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started just being a fan of music. I immediately got immersed in the music scene by doing music journalism interviewing artists that I love. I intern led for a lovely woman named Ms.P doing music articles and booking major label recording artists for her internet radio show. I did so well that she recommended I branch out on my own and start my own online radio show. She gifted me a mini notebook laptop. With it I merged underground talent with major label talent. I would interview artists from RCA Records, Darkchild Records, VH1, and Cash Money Records. I hosted fan calls and also had the major label artists listening to the local artists from my town. I created a beautiful platform but I didn’t know what I had. I didn’t know I could monetize and get sponsors. Back in 2012-2013 podcasting wasn’t a big thing in the music space. Anyway you become who you hang out with and I hung out with a lot of rappers. So I eventually became one. I sucked at it at first. My flow was more suited for spoken word. I had to learn techniques to chop words and bars to fit a certain way in the beat and still get my message across. Flowing to Lost Ones by Lauryn Hill is what really taught me how to rap and how to develop my own flow. Anyway I stuck to it and discovered my purpose of delivering music with a message. As I evolved and developed my skills , my consciousness rap style took a liking to other afro centric genres including Afro House , Reggae, Amapiano, Afro Soul and sound healing. I was testing my freestyle ability with a vocal effects machine and created a sound healing method called Melodic Meditation.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road and it’s still not. At first, I was just struggling to have the basic necessities being on and off homeless under my mother’s care. My mom rented a room. We shared a single small bedroom while I was running that online radio platform called The Underground Krown Show. I started that journey sophomore year in highschool. Once I was grown and was able to live on my own I solidified my own security. But now the new challenge is balancing working fulltime at my big girl job as a train engineer and managing my music career and still making time for community, family, love, and myself. It’s a lot.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a conscious rapper and songwriter who loves flowing to all kinds of afro centric music keeping hip hop at the root. I am most proud of being a vessel of The Most High channeling messages in the music. I am the founder and creator of Melodic Meditation healing myself and my global community. What sets me apart is that although I do music, I am not an entertainer. I am a messenger like Bob Marley was. I’m a messenger like Lauryn Hill is a messenger. Being that I am not an entertainer, I know my come up in music could be a long journey. I don’t make microwave music and I don’t follow trendy sounds and topics. I simply make feel good music with hardcore truth. All the lyrics I wrote years ago are major key topics on podcasts now. I know I’m futuristic. I know my music isn’t for everyone either. My music is for those who are ready to face their darkness and light. My music is for those ready to empower themselves and their community.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I think everyone who deals with me knows I’m spiritual. But I don’t think they know how religious I am as well. I’m devoted to my relationship with God religiously. That’s why I am inspired by Muslims who pray 5 times a day. This is something I naturally do. I don’t count but I know I pray multiple times a day for comfort. It feels like holding hands with God all day. I’m inspired by Rastafari and Krishna Consciousness because how clean they eat in order to truly be vessel for God. Anytime I eat clean I am cleansed and my intuition is the strongest. I admire Pentecostals and Orishas for how they prostrate before the Lord. This is truly my worshipping style. A lot of people don’t know how deep it gets for me because my rituals a normally private, in house, or in my prayer closet.
