Today we’d like to introduce you to Chef Darius And Dr. Wakeena Dickens.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Dr. Wakeena Dickens:
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Long before Down Home Comfort Cafe existed, I was dabbling businesses, serving communities, and pursuing my passion for helping people. I earned my Doctor of Management in Organizational Leadership, served in the U.S. Army, and spent years developing my leadership and business skills in the higher education, management consulting and health care space. In 2017, I organized my husband, Chef Darius’ catering company Bon Mangé Cuisine into an Limited Liability Company and created processes which officially allowed us to share our love for food and hospitality with others seamlessly no matter the size of the request.
Over the years, I learned that entrepreneurship is rarely a straight path. There were challenges, setbacks, and moments when we had to reinvent ourselves, but each experience taught us valuable lessons about resilience, faith, and perseverance. Those lessons ultimately became the foundation of both our business and our lives.
Chef Darius Dickens:
For me, food has always been about bringing people together. I’ve spent years honing my craft as a chef and learning how to create meals that not only satisfy people but make them feel at home. Growing up, food was a way to connect with family and community, and I wanted to carry that same feeling into everything we created.
When Wakeena and I combined our strengths, her business and leadership background with my culinary expertise, we realized we had the opportunity to build something special. We didn’t just want to open a restaurant; we wanted to create a place where people felt welcomed, valued, and connected.
Together:
In 2022, we expanded and opened our first eatery location inside of a food hall, and in November 2023, we launched Down Home Comfort Cafe, our 1st stand alone brick and mortar. Our vision was simple: serve authentic comfort food with exceptional hospitality while creating a gathering place for our community.
Since then, we’ve been blessed to experience tremendous growth. We’ve received recognition for our business, catered events for notable clients and organizations, been featured in local media, and built an amazing team. But what we’re most proud of is the impact we’ve had on our customers and community.
Today, Down Home Comfort Cafe is more than a restaurant. It’s a reflection of our journey, our values, and our belief that great food and genuine hospitality can bring people together. Every challenge we’ve overcome and every success we’ve celebrated has helped shape who we are, and we’re excited about what the future holds as we continue growing our business and serving our community.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Dr. Wakeena Dickens:
Absolutely not. While we’re incredibly grateful for where we are today, our journey has been anything but smooth. Like many entrepreneurs, we’ve experienced moments of uncertainty, setbacks, financial challenges, and difficult decisions that tested our resolve.
One of the biggest misconceptions people have about business ownership is that success happens overnight. What they don’t see are the years of sacrifice, long hours, sleepless nights, and countless moments when you’re trying to figure out how to keep moving forward despite obstacles.
There were times when we invested everything we had into our vision and had no guarantee that it would work. We had to learn how to navigate economic challenges, staffing shortages, rising food costs, operational hurdles, and the everyday pressures that come with running a business.
Chef Darius Dickens:
The restaurant industry is one of the toughest industries there is. You’re balancing food costs, labor, customer expectations, equipment issues, regulations, and a hundred other things at the same time. There are days when everything goes exactly as planned, and there are days when nothing goes as planned.
What people don’t often realize is that behind every successful restaurant is a tremendous amount of work happening behind the scenes. There were periods when we worked long hours, wore multiple hats, and made personal sacrifices to keep the business moving forward.
There were moments when we questioned whether the challenges were worth it, but we always came back to our purpose and the people we serve.
Dr. Wakeena Dickens:
For me personally, one of the greatest challenges was learning how to trust the process. I’m a planner by nature, but entrepreneurship has taught me that not everything unfolds according to your timeline. Sometimes doors close so better opportunities can open.
I’ve learned that resilience isn’t about avoiding challenges, it’s about continuing to move forward despite them. Every setback taught us something valuable. Every obstacle forced us to grow. Every difficult season strengthened our leadership and our faith.
Chef Darius Dickens:
The challenges also taught us the importance of teamwork. There were moments when one of us had to carry more weight while the other regrouped. Having a partner who shares the vision and refuses to quit makes all the difference.
Those difficult seasons helped us build not only a stronger business but also a stronger marriage, stronger leadership skills, and a deeper appreciation for every milestone we achieve.
Together:
Looking back, we wouldn’t change the journey because the struggles helped shape who we are today. They taught us perseverance, humility, patience, adaptability, and gratitude.
If there’s one message we’d share with aspiring entrepreneurs, it’s this: don’t let the challenges convince you to quit. Success isn’t the absence of obstacles; it’s having the courage to keep going when the road gets difficult.
The road hasn’t been smooth, but it has absolutely been worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Dr. Wakeena Dickens:
At our core, we’re hospitality entrepreneurs. Our company, BMC Food Group, is the parent company of Down Home Comfort Cafe, where we combine exceptional food, genuine hospitality, and community connection. While many people know us for our restaurant, we’re much more than that. We offer dine-in service, catering, private events, corporate dining solutions, and community-centered experiences designed to bring people together around great food.
What makes us unique is that every aspect of our business is deeply personal. This isn’t just a business venture for us, it’s a reflection of our family, our values, and our commitment to serving others. Every customer who walks through our doors is treated like family because that’s how we genuinely view hospitality.
Chef Darius Dickens:
From the culinary side, we specialize in elevated Southern comfort food. We take traditional recipes and flavors that people know and love and prepare them with quality ingredients, attention to detail, and a lot of heart. Whether it’s our signature catfish, wings, shrimp and grits, gumbo, or one of our catered brunch experiences, we want every guest to leave feeling like they’ve had a memorable experience, not just a meal.
We’re known for creating food that feels familiar while still exceeding expectations. People often tell us that our food reminds them of home, family gatherings, and special occasions, and that’s one of the greatest compliments we can receive.
Dr. Wakeena Dickens:
What truly sets us apart is the combination of our strengths. I bring a background in leadership, business strategy, and organizational development, while Chef Darius brings years of culinary expertise and creativity. Together, we’ve built a brand that focuses equally on operational excellence, customer experience, and community impact.
We’re also proud that we’ve been able to grow while remaining authentic to who we are. In a world where businesses often chase trends, we’ve stayed committed to our mission of providing quality food, meaningful service, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Chef Darius Dickens:
One thing we’re especially proud of is the reputation we’ve built. Our customers don’t just come back because the food is good; they come back because they feel connected to the brand. That trust is something we never take for granted.
We’ve been fortunate to receive awards, media recognition, and opportunities to serve notable clients, but the moments that mean the most are when customers tell us we’ve become their favorite restaurant, their family’s gathering place, or the caterer they trust for life’s most important celebrations.
Together:
What we want readers to know is that Down Home Comfort Cafe is more than a restaurant, it’s an experience built on faith, perseverance, excellence, and service. Every challenge we’ve faced has strengthened our commitment to our customers and community.
Whether someone visits us for lunch, hires us to cater a wedding or corporate event, attends one of our community gatherings, or simply follows our journey, we want them to know they’re supporting a business that genuinely cares about people.
Our goal has never been just to serve food. Our goal is to create memorable experiences, build lasting relationships, and leave people better than we found them.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Chef Darius Dickens:
With the business, there are countless people who have poured into us, believed in us, out question, this journey has never been a solo effort. While Wakeena and I are the faces behind and supported us along the way. We firmly believe that success is built on relationships, and we’ve been fortunate to have an incredible village behind us.
First and foremost, we have to acknowledge our family. Entrepreneurship requires sacrifice, long hours, and unwavering commitment. Our family has supported us through the highs and lows, celebrated our victories, and encouraged us during the moments when things felt uncertain.
Dr. Wakeena Dickens:
I would also say that our faith has played a tremendous role in our journey. There have been many moments when the path wasn’t clear, but we’ve been blessed with mentors, advisors, and advocates who showed up exactly when we needed guidance, encouragement, or a different perspective.
Organizations within the business community have also played a significant role in our growth. Through networking opportunities, business development programs, and strategic partnerships, we’ve gained access to resources, education, and relationships that have helped us grow as leaders and entrepreneurs.
Our fellow business owners have been incredibly generous as well. Entrepreneurship can feel lonely at times, but having a community of people who understand the challenges and celebrate the wins has been invaluable.
Chef Darius Dickens:
We also have to recognize our team. No restaurant succeeds because of two people. Every team member who has worked alongside us has contributed to the culture and experience we strive to create. From our kitchen staff to our front-of-house team, they’ve helped bring our vision to life every day.
We’re especially grateful for the team members who believed in our mission and worked tirelessly to help us build the reputation we have today. Their commitment to excellence and customer service has had a direct impact on our success.
Dr. Wakeena Dickens:
And then there are our customers. Honestly, none of this would exist without them. Every person who chose to dine with us, hire us for catering, recommend us to a friend, leave a positive review, or share our story has helped us grow.
Many of our customers have become more than customers—they’ve become advocates, ambassadors, and extended family. They’ve celebrated milestones with us, encouraged us during difficult seasons, and continued to support us as we’ve evolved.
We’ve also been fortunate to serve community leaders, organizations, and notable clients who trusted us with important events and opportunities. Those relationships opened doors and created visibility that helped us reach new audiences.
Together:
If there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that success is never achieved alone. Every mentor, supporter, advocate, employee, customer, friend, family member, and community partner has played a role in our story.
We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve built, but we’re even more grateful for the people who helped make it possible. Our success belongs to everyone who believed in us before the rest of the world knew our name.
