Life & Work with Rob Ace Holmes of Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Ace Holmes.

Hi Rob Ace, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began in Hampton VA. My dad was military (Army 20 years), we moved around a little when I was younger and ended up settling in Hampton, VA. I played sports – basketball and football and ended up working at farm fresh as a teenager. I attended Christopher Newport university majoring in business management and minor in communications. My professional background is heavy in customer service, some HR recruiting. My creative journey began at 14, I started writing because of my love for music. I always have to credit my 10th grade English teacher (Mr. Tolliver) we did a poetry project (write 10 different styles of poems, present one to the class) I did mine in 1 weekend; it felt effortless. A few weeks after that everyone but theirs back and I didn’t get mine… my teacher kept mine as a model. I was honored. I continued to write and in fall of 2016 I began performing on stage. Fast forward, I’m currently writing book 6, cohost an open mic in the Phoebus area & am a board member of Artists United- a non profit organization that focuses on highlighting peninsula artist through events, stage plays etc.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Struggles- balancing mental health with everything. I’ve been very high functioning since my teenage years. I’ve learned to navigate my mental health by talking to my support system, going to therapy and taking the proper medication as well. I have to give much credit to my support system (Thee Tribe called blessed)- they truly keep me going!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am currently a scholarship coordinator for Hampton University (a local HBCU), I focus on assisting families/students with financial aid through scholarships and grants. My goal is to minimize the stress that comes with the financial burden of attending a university.

How do you think about happiness?
Art and family make me happy. I do my best to be present for both. By nature I’m a giver; I support & celebrate my family friends and creative colleagues as much as possible.
