Hi Glen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was an unemployed college professor at age 30 so I went door-to-door looking for odd jobs. Since it was October, several people wanted leaves removed. One man wanted his gutters cleaned and I obliged. I realized I could make more and work faster cleaning gutters so I started Leaf Relief Gutter Cleaning. I went back to work as a teacher and coach and built the business on the side for over 30 years when I went fulltime in 2015 in both NC and VA.
We have been growing in size and coverage areas since then. We now cover all of southern central VA and service the Triad in NC near Winston-Salem, NC.
We service residential and commercial customers and we clean gutters, add gutter guards, clear underground pipes, pressure wash houses and gutters, etc.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
God has blessed us and growth has been steady with many return customers and good word-of-mouth advertising. We struggle like everyone with weather challenges, personnel issues, and logistical concerns, but overall, we have had a great impact on the community, and we still enjoy helping customers to pr0tect their homes from wat issues caused by dirty gutters, This, the slogan, “Are your gutters clean?” says it all for us.

This business was started as a service to others. We always try to meet customer needs while maintaining a pleasant and professional relationship with others. Our prices are kept low to help people to afford this essential service to protect homes and business. We want things to be done right, and if that n=means returning to the job to fix something, we take responsibility for it.
For instance, rather than using overpriced gutter guards from companies with bait-and-switch high pressure sales practices, we offer an affordable option at a realistic price-point with even better American made product quality. Profits are needed to run a business, but that does not mean that a company should charge exorbitant prices, treat customers like numbers, or provide low quality work.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I have not always been a business owner. I have been a teacher for over 40 years and have two doctorates and I train future teachers still today. But I do remember as a child that we started a night crawler business for fisherman. We would spend long nights in the yard with a bucket and a flashlight. I learned from this that hard work provides potential financial help when you find a need and fill the need. That is what I applied to this business model.
