Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee Kondor.
Hi Lee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I enjoy doing engineering work, so when I retired from Raytheon in 2019, I started Kondor Engineering to see if I could find some engineering projects to work on. I have submitted white papers to the US Navy in response to Broad Agency Announcements related to integrated power and propulsion systems for various future ship platforms and numerous concept designs to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for various transportation infrastructure improvement projects, none of which have resulted in paying projects but were nevertheless fun to do. I also found a paying project through the Virginia Manufacturers Association to design a robotic cell to pack plastic bottles in boxes for a company that manufactured blow-molded plastic bottles.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Had my objective been to make money, I would have to consider Kondor Engineering to be a failure, but since my objective was only to have engineering projects to work on, I’m satisfied with how things have worked out. The only setback I encountered was the company for which I designed the robotic cell going out of business shortly after the project was completed. The prospect of follow-on projects was never able to materialize.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have over 50 years of experience as an engineer, during which time I have worked for several large companies (GE, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon) and a few small companies. I specialize primarily in industrial automation, but I am equally adept at mechanical engineering, and my background in mechanical engineering gives me a unique advantage as an automation engineer because I thoroughly understand the equipment to be automated.
What were you like growing up?
I was always building things since my earliest years, and since I was very good at math and science, there was never any doubt that I wanted to be an engineer.
