Today we’d like to introduce you to Celeste A Mensah.
Hi Celeste A , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey to pediatric dentistry has been driven by two passions: caring for children and serving patients with special healthcare needs. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, I pursued my dental education at New York University College of Dentistry, where I participated in the Special Patient Care Honors Program during my senior year. Working with patients with special needs was one of the most rewarding experiences of my training and helped shape the direction of my career.
Following dental school, I completed a General Practice Residency and Fellowship at Helen Hayes Hospital, affiliated with Columbia University, where I gained additional experience treating patients with complex medical and special healthcare needs. While becoming a dentist was a lifelong goal, I soon realized that my passion for working with children inspired me to further specialize in pediatric dentistry.
I completed a two-year Pediatric Dental Residency at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, where I served as Chief Resident. During my specialty training, I cared for children with craniofacial anomalies, neurodivergence, special healthcare needs, and complex medical histories. To further expand my ability to provide safe and comfortable care, I also completed a fellowship in Dental Anesthesia at Indiana University School of Medicine, receiving advanced training in sedation and airway management.
Having grown up in Northern Virginia and New York City, I am thrilled to be back in Northern Virginia serving the community I call home with the opening of my new pediatric dental practice, Kind Roots Pediatric Dentistry. I am dedicated to helping children develop healthy smiles in a fun, welcoming, and fear-free environment. I believe in a conservative, minimally invasive approach to dental care and am committed to making every visit safe, comfortable, and positive for both children and their families.
Outside of chasing sugar bugs (cavities), I enjoy traveling, community service, working out, and exploring new foods.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth roads seem great until a small bit of moisture arises (challenge) and it could change things in an instant!
The road to becoming a pediatric dentist has been incredibly rewarding, but it certainly was not without challenges. The educational and training journey was long, requiring years of rigorous study, clinical training, and sacrifice. Balancing the demands of dental school, residency programs, and advanced specialty training often meant long hours and limited personal time.
One of the biggest challenges was caring for children and patients with complex medical and special healthcare needs. These experiences required not only technical skills but also patience, adaptability, and a commitment to understanding each patient’s unique circumstances. Learning how to provide high-quality care while helping anxious children and families feel comfortable was a skill that took time and experience to develop.
There were also moments of self-doubt along the way, particularly during demanding stages of training. However, those challenges reinforced my passion for pediatric dentistry and reminded me why I chose this path in the first place. Every obstacle became an opportunity to grow, and each experience helped shape the compassionate, patient-centered approach I bring to my practice today.
Looking back, the journey was not always easy, but it was absolutely worth it!!
Seeing children gain confidence in their smiles and helping families have positive dental experiences continues to make every step of the journey meaningful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Kind Roots Pediatric Dentistry is a pediatric dental practice dedicated to providing compassionate, relationship-centered dental care for infants, children, adolescents, and patients with special healthcare needs. Our mission is to help children build healthy smiles and positive dental experiences that last.
What sets us apart is our commitment to combining clinical excellence with genuine kindness. We believe every child deserves to feel understood and we take the time to tailor care to each child’s unique needs, personality, and comfort level. Our practice emphasizes prevention, education, and partnership with parents to support whole-child wellness.
Many families quickly learn that their child’s pediatric dentist likes to sing. Whether it’s a favorite Disney tune, a silly made-up song, or a few notes to ease nervousness, music is one of the ways we help children feel relaxed and cared for during their visit.
As a locally owned practice, we are especially proud of the welcoming environment we have created for families. The Kind Roots name reflects our belief that healthy habits, trust, and confidence are built from the roots up. More than just treating teeth, we strive to nurture positive experiences that help children grow into healthy, confident adults that continue to visit the dentist.
We want readers to know that at Kind Roots Pediatric Dentistry, families can expect expert care, honest communication, and a team that truly enjoys caring for children. Every kiddo matters, and we are honored to be part of each child’s journey.
How do you think about luck?
I believe luck often shows up in the form of timing, opportunity, and people. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to have mentors, colleagues, family members, and friends who have encouraged me, opened doors, and supported me through challenges. At the same time, building a business has taught me that luck alone isn’t enough. You have to be prepared to recognize opportunities when they come and willing to keep moving forward when things don’t go according to plan.
People often see a new business opening and assume everything fell into place, but entrepreneurship has a way of humbling you. I’ve experienced both fortunate breaks and unexpected challenges during the journey to opening Kind Roots Pediatric Dentistry. What I’ve learned is that “luck” often looks a lot like persistence.
At the same time, my faith has been an important source of strength throughout the process. There were moments when the path forward wasn’t clear, and I had to trust that each step was preparing me for the next one. Looking back, I am grateful not only for the opportunities that came my way, but also for the challenges that helped me grow. I believe success is built through hard work, perseverance, supportive relationships, faith, and yes, sometimes a little good fortune along the way.
My faith has grounded me through every stage of that journey. When plans changed, obstacles appeared, or timelines stretched longer than expected, faith helped me remain focused on the purpose behind the work. Looking back, I don’t see a series of lucky breaks as much as I see doors opening at the right time and lessons emerging from difficult seasons. I am grateful for every person, opportunity, and challenge that helped bring this dream to life.
