Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Ferenc.
Hi Kelly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
This summer, Bishop Boutique celebrates 15 years in business, and it’s hard to believe how quickly the time has gone. I opened the boutique with a simple vision: to create a welcoming space where women could discover beautiful, thoughtfully curated clothing while feeling confident, inspired, and genuinely cared for.
Over the past 15 years, we’ve grown into so much more than a clothing store. We’ve become part of the Alexandria community—celebrating milestones with our customers, hosting local events, supporting charities, partnering with small businesses and artists, and building relationships that have lasted for years. Many of the women who shopped with us when we first opened still walk through our doors today, and we’ve had the privilege of styling their daughters, friends, and even multiple generations of families.
Like every small business, the journey hasn’t always been easy. We’ve navigated economic uncertainty, changing retail trends, a global pandemic, and countless unexpected challenges. Each obstacle has pushed us to evolve—expanding our online business, finding new ways to connect with customers, and remaining committed to delivering the personal service that has always been at the heart of Bishop Boutique.
As a mother of five, owning Bishop Boutique has also been a deeply personal journey. Growing the business while raising my family has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of surrounding yourself with an incredible community. I couldn’t have reached this milestone without our loyal customers, dedicated team, and the support of Alexandria.
Fifteen years later, I feel just as excited about the future as I did on opening day. We’re continually looking for new ways to serve our customers, bring fresh fashion to the community, and create an experience that makes every woman who walks through our doors feel special. Reaching this milestone is something we’re incredibly proud of, and we’re so grateful to everyone who has been part of our story.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Over the past 15 years, we’ve weathered just about every challenge imaginable. We’ve lived through economic uncertainty, changing consumer shopping habits, the rapid growth of online retail, rising operating costs, supply chain disruptions, inflation, staffing shortages, and, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic—which completely changed the retail landscape overnight. Like so many small business owners, we’ve also dealt with unexpected setbacks that customers rarely see, from equipment failures and maintenance issues to the day-to-day responsibility of making payroll, managing inventory, and ensuring the doors stay open no matter what.
At the same time, I was raising my family. I’m a mom five times over, and one thing many people don’t realize is that business owners don’t get the traditional maternity leave that most employees receive. There isn’t paid time off, someone to step in, or the ability to simply disconnect for several months. With each of my five children, the business still needed me. Bills still had to be paid, employees still depended on me, customers still expected us to be open, and every decision ultimately rested on my shoulders. Learning how to balance motherhood with entrepreneurship has been one of the greatest challenges—and one of the greatest blessings—of my life.
There were moments when the path felt overwhelming, but every challenge reinforced why I started Bishop Boutique in the first place. Our customers became more than shoppers—they became friends, cheerleaders, and a true community. Watching women come back year after year, then seeing them bring their daughters, sisters, and friends into the boutique, has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.
Fifteen years later, Bishop Boutique has grown into so much more than a clothing store. It’s a place where women gather, where local businesses support one another, and where relationships matter just as much as the products we sell. I’m incredibly grateful to our loyal customers, our amazing team, and the Alexandria community for believing in us through every high and every low.
Looking back, I’m proud not only of what we’ve built, but of the perseverance it took to build it. Small business ownership isn’t easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Every challenge has made us stronger, every customer has become part of our story, and after 15 years, I’m more excited than ever about what comes next.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At Bishop Boutique, we specialize in helping women feel confident, beautiful, and comfortable in what they wear. We curate a thoughtful collection of clothing, shoes, and accessories from brands we truly believe in, focusing on timeless style, quality, and pieces that fit into real women’s lives. Whether someone is shopping for a special event, updating their wardrobe, or simply looking for an outfit that makes them feel their best, our goal is to provide a personalized shopping experience that goes far beyond a typical retail transaction.
What we’re most known for is the relationships we’ve built over the past 15 years. Our customers know they’ll receive honest styling advice, exceptional customer service, and a welcoming environment where they never feel pressured. We take the time to get to know the women who shop with us—their style, their lifestyle, and what makes them feel confident. Many of our customers have been with us since the day we opened, and today we have the privilege of helping multiple generations of the same families.
I’m also incredibly proud of the role Bishop Boutique has played in our community. Over the years, we’ve partnered with local charities, hosted fundraising events, showcased local artists and small businesses, and created a space where people genuinely enjoy gathering. Supporting our community has always been just as important as selling clothing.
What truly sets us apart is that we’re an independent boutique in a world increasingly dominated by large retailers and online shopping. Every item in our store has been personally selected, every display thoughtfully created, and every customer interaction is intentional. We believe shopping should feel personal, inspiring, and enjoyable—not transactional.
Perhaps what I’m most proud of is that we’ve remained true to who we are for 15 years. Through changing fashion trends, economic challenges, a global pandemic, and the constant evolution of retail, we’ve continued to adapt while never losing sight of what matters most: serving our customers with authenticity, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to making every woman who walks through our doors feel seen, confident, and valued.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
One thing that surprises people is that while they see the finished product—a beautiful boutique, curated collections, events, and a thriving business—they don’t always see everything happening behind the scenes. As the owner of Bishop Boutique, I’ve worn every hat imaginable over the past 15 years. I’ve been the buyer, merchandiser, marketer, accountant, social media manager, event planner, stylist, cleaner, problem solver, and sometimes even the maintenance crew. Small business ownership means you’re constantly adapting and doing whatever needs to be done.
Many people are also surprised to learn that I’ve built Bishop Boutique while raising five children. Being a mom five times over while running a small business has been one of the greatest challenges of my life. Unlike most careers, business owners don’t get a traditional maternity leave. With each of my children, there wasn’t an option to simply step away for months—the business still needed me, employees depended on me, and our customers counted on us being there. Looking back, I’m proud that I was able to grow both my family and my business at the same time.
I think that’s what people don’t always see: behind every small business is a person making countless sacrifices, working long hours, and pouring their heart into something they believe in. Fifteen years later, I still feel incredibly grateful that I get to do what I love every day, serve this amazing community, and show my children what perseverance, hard work, and passion can build.
