Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Bartos.
Hi Maria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve never really taken a straight path to entrepreneurship. I earned my undergraduate degree in Communication Studies with a concentration in Public Relations from James Madison University, where I fell in love with storytelling and branding. During college, I interned as a broadcast intern for D.C. United and later as a public relations intern with Linda Roth PR in Washington, D.C., experiences that cemented my passion for marketing and communications.
After graduation, I spent several years as a management consultant in the government contracting world before earning my master’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communications from Emerson College in Boston. From there, I worked in business development in the advertising industry before eventually returning to government contracting, where I continued building a career in marketing and business development.
When my children were born, I stepped away from the corporate world for several years to raise them while also starting a small marketing consulting business. Around that same time, I began baking cookies as a creative outlet and launched Milkworthy Cookies as a side hustle. Baking and cooking have always been woven into my life—both sides of my family spent countless hours in the kitchen, and feeding people has always been one of my love languages. Music has always been another. Combining those two passions into musically inspired cookies just felt like the most authentic expression of who I am.
Life took an unexpected turn during COVID when I went through a divorce and moved, which meant returning to full-time corporate work as the Marketing Director for a startup in the children’s education space. I spent three years helping grow that company while continuing to build Milkworthy on nights and weekends.
Eventually, I realized that if I was ever going to find out what Milkworthy could become, I had to bet on myself. I left corporate America to pursue the business full-time. I’m completely self-taught as a baker—I learned everything through countless hours of research, experimentation, and more than a few failed batches—but building Milkworthy has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It’s been exciting, exhausting, terrifying, and incredibly fulfilling all at once. Today, I’m focused on growing the business, expanding our reach, and proving that a cookie can be more than dessert—it can tell a story, evoke a memory, and bring people together through the universal language of music.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I don’t think I’d appreciate where I am today if it had been.
One of the biggest challenges has simply been learning how to be a business owner. I didn’t go to culinary school or business school, and there wasn’t anyone handing me a playbook. I taught myself how to bake professionally, but I also had to learn everything else—from food regulations and accounting to website development, shipping logistics, pricing, photography, marketing, wholesale, licensing, inventory management, and cash flow. Every time I figure one thing out, there are three more things waiting to be learned. I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way, and some of them have been expensive, but they’ve also been some of my greatest teachers.
Doing it entirely on my own has been another challenge. When you’re a solo entrepreneur, every decision, every success, and every setback rests on your shoulders. Without a business partner to bounce ideas off of, it’s easy to develop tunnel vision or second-guess yourself. Entrepreneurship can be surprisingly lonely. You’re always “on,” and it’s difficult to separate your business from your personal life because they’re so deeply intertwined.
Of course, there’s also the financial uncertainty. There are moments when I’ve questioned whether I should have taken the safer path and stayed in corporate America. Building something from the ground up requires a tremendous amount of faith, and there are days when exhaustion and self-doubt compete with ambition. As a small business owner, you’re constantly balancing the desire to innovate and improve with the practical need to control costs and simply keep the business moving forward.
On top of that, the specialty cookie market is incredibly crowded. Creating a great cookie isn’t enough anymore—you have to create an experience and a brand that people remember. That’s pushed me to think differently. Milkworthy’s musically inspired concept allows me to combine two of my greatest passions while telling a story through every flavor, and that authenticity has become one of our biggest strengths.
Through it all, my children have remained my greatest motivation. I want to build something that becomes a legacy they’re proud of, but just as importantly, I want them to see that meaningful things rarely come easy. I hope they see that it’s possible to take a risk, work incredibly hard, learn as you go, recover from mistakes, and keep showing up even when things feel uncertain. If they take away anything from watching this journey, I hope it’s that perseverance often matters more than having all the answers.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Milkworthy Cookies® is a small, woman-owned artisan cookie company based in the Washington, D.C. metro area, proudly shipping nationwide—and occasionally internationally—to customers who want something a little more memorable than the average cookie.
We specialize in large, gourmet, musically inspired cookies, where every flavor begins with a song and evolves into a recipe designed to capture its mood, story, or nostalgia. Music has an incredible ability to transport us back to a moment in time, and I wanted my cookies to do the same. Every monthly flavor is paired with a curated playlist, turning dessert into an experience that engages more than just your taste buds.
What sets Milkworthy apart is that our flavors aren’t created simply for shock value or social media trends. While they’re certainly creative, they’re rooted in balance, craftsmanship, and exceptional ingredients. I spend countless hours developing recipes that are indulgent without feeling gimmicky, using premium ingredients that genuinely make a difference in both flavor and texture. I want someone to take one bite and immediately notice the quality.
I’m also incredibly proud of the brand itself. From the beginning, I wanted Milkworthy to feel elevated—from the cookies to the packaging to the unboxing experience. Every individually wrapped cookie is thoughtfully presented so that opening a box feels less like receiving baked goods and more like opening a carefully curated gift. As someone with a background in marketing and branding, creating that luxury experience has always been just as important to me as creating an unforgettable cookie.
One milestone I’m especially proud of was securing the registered trademark for Milkworthy Cookies®. Building a recognizable brand takes years of consistency and intention, and earning that ® represented another step toward building something lasting.
At its heart, Milkworthy is about bringing people together. Whether someone is celebrating a birthday, thanking a client, surprising a friend, or simply treating themselves after a long week, I want every cookie to create a moment worth savoring. My goal has never been to make just another cookie—it’s to create an experience that feels nostalgic, luxurious, and just a little bit magical.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
For me, happiness comes from creating experiences that connect people. That’s one of the reasons Milkworthy brings me so much joy.
One of my favorite parts of the creative process is hearing a song and immediately beginning to taste the cookie in my mind. I’ll hear a lyric, a melody, or feel a certain emotion, and suddenly I know exactly what ingredients belong together to capture that feeling. It’s a strange combination of music, memory, and flavor, and it’s unlike anything I’ve experienced in any other job. Even more surreal is when I have the opportunity to share those cookies with the artists who inspired them. Seeing them understand the connection is incredibly rewarding.
The greatest compliment I can receive, though, is hearing that my cookies became part of someone’s story—a birthday, a wedding, a thank-you gift, a difficult day that became a little brighter, or simply a moment shared with family or friends. Knowing that something I created brought a little extra joy into someone’s life is what makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Outside of work, the things that fill my cup are pretty simple: live music, incredible food, meaningful conversations, traveling somewhere new, spending time in nature, and making memories with my family and friends. I also have endless admiration for people who are deeply passionate about what they do and are willing to share that passion with the world, whether they’re musicians, chefs, artists, or entrepreneurs.
Perhaps the biggest source of happiness, though, is knowing that my children are watching me build something from the ground up. Entrepreneurship hasn’t been the easiest or most financially comfortable path, and there have certainly been sacrifices along the way. We may not always take the extravagant vacations that some families do, but I hope they’re learning something even more valuable: that it’s okay to take risks, to work hard for something you believe in, and to build a life that’s aligned with who you are.
For the first time in my life, I feel like my personal passions and my professional life are no longer separate. The work I do every day is a reflection of who I am, and there’s a deep sense of fulfillment that comes from knowing I built something entirely from scratch that feels authentically mine.
