Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Vandegrift.
Hi crystal, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started Crystal Image Photography in 1995 when I was 21 years old. I had just graduated from college with a degree in photography and was working as a photographer for a local newspaper. Ironically, I never set out to become a wedding photographer.
One day, a couple walked into the newspaper office looking for someone who could photograph their wedding that weekend. No one else was available. I remember thinking, “I’ve never photographed a wedding before,” but something told me to take the opportunity. That wedding took place in December of 1995, and it completely changed the direction of my life.
After that first wedding, referrals came quickly. One wedding led to another, and before long I was photographing weddings almost every weekend. As the business grew, I built my first photography studio at my home and eventually opened a retail storefront studio in Farmville, Virginia. I operated that studio for eight years before deciding to transition back to a home-based business as the photography industry changed and my work began taking me across Virginia and beyond.
Today, more than 30 years later, Crystal Image Photography has grown into a team of 11 photographers and videographers serving couples throughout Virginia and destination weddings across the country. Although our team photographs many of our weddings, I’m still personally involved in every client’s experience from the first consultation and wedding planning to editing, quality control, and the final delivery of their images. Maintaining a consistent, high-quality experience has always been incredibly important to me.
I’m honored to have been recognized by The Knot as a Best of Weddings honoree for 16 consecutive years and inducted into The Knot Hall of Fame, which honors wedding professionals who have consistently provided exceptional service. My work has also been published in a variety of regional and national magazines.
While building Crystal Image Photography, I continued my career in the newspaper industry. I started as a staff photographer and later became a reporter, which allowed me to combine photography with storytelling through writing. Throughout those years, I was fortunate to receive numerous awards in writing and photography from the Virginia Press Association.
I truly believe my journalism background has shaped the way I photograph weddings. Instead of trying to create every moment, I’ve learned to anticipate them. Some of the most meaningful photographs happen naturally.
Over the past three decades, I’ve watched photography evolve from film and printed proof books to digital galleries, drones, and cinematic wedding films. While the technology has changed tremendously, my philosophy has remained the same. My goal has never been simply to take beautiful photographs. It’s to create images that tell a story and allow all couples to relive one of the most important days of their lives every time they look through their wedding gallery. Everyone deserves to have their wedding day captured.
Looking back, one of the greatest blessings of this career has been the relationships I’ve built. Many of the couples I photographed years ago now come back with their growing families, and I’ve had the privilege of documenting multiple generations and life’s biggest milestones. That’s something I’ll never take for granted.
When I think about how this all started, it’s amazing to realize that everything began because I said “yes” to an opportunity that I had never done before. More than 30 years later, I still feel just as honored every time a couple trusts Crystal Image Photography to tell their story.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. Like any business that’s been around for more than 30 years, there have been plenty of challenges along the way.
When I first started, I was 21 years old and trying to convince people to trust someone so young with one of the most important days of their lives. Not to mention it was a male-dominated industry, unlike today. I had to work hard to build my reputation one wedding at a time. Every client mattered because word-of-mouth was everything.
As the years went on, I experienced the same challenges many small business owners face long hours, balancing family life with weekends spent photographing weddings, learning how to market my business as technology changed, and adapting to an industry that has evolved dramatically. I’ve photographed weddings on film, transitioned to digital, watched social media completely change how couples find photographers, and continually invested in new equipment, education, and technology to stay ahead.
One of the biggest lessons I learned was that I couldn’t do everything by myself. For years, I was the photographer, editor, bookkeeper, marketer, customer service representative, and business owner all rolled into one. Eventually, I realized that if I wanted to continue growing while maintaining the level of service my clients deserved, I needed to build a team. Today, we have 11 photographers and videographers, and while that transition wasn’t always easy, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Like many businesses, COVID also brought uncertainty. Weddings were postponed, schedules constantly changed, and there were moments when none of us knew what the industry would look like. It challenged every wedding professional to become flexible, creative, and compassionate. Thankfully, we came through it stronger than ever.
Looking back, I don’t think success comes from avoiding challenges. It comes from being willing to adapt, continue learning, and never lose sight of why you started. In the wedding photography business, you have to learn to adapt to the changes, or you will quickly be out of business. Every obstacle taught me something that ultimately made both me and my business stronger.
If I could sum up my journey in one sentence, it would be this: building a successful business isn’t about having a smooth road; it’s about continuing to move forward even when the road gets rough. You have to stick with it. Those who quickly jump into the wedding photography business will quickly jump out. Learn your camera, learn the poses, yes, but first and foremost, learn how to operate a business and follow that with great customer service.

What I love most about weddings is that no two are ever the same. Every couple has a unique story, and it’s an incredible privilege to be trusted with preserving one of the most important days of their lives. Our goal is to create images that are timeless, emotional, and authentic photographs that allow our couples to relive not only what their wedding looked like, but how it felt.
Even though we’ve grown, one thing has never changed: every couple receives the same level of care and attention that I’ve built my reputation on. I remain personally involved in every wedding, from helping couples plan their timeline to overseeing the editing process and ensuring every gallery meets the standards that have defined our brand.
I believe one of the things that sets us apart is our experience. After photographing hundreds of weddings over three decades, we’ve learned that beautiful photographs are only part of the job. Being a calm presence when timelines change, helping a nervous bride take a deep breath before walking down the aisle, fixing a boutonniere, bustling a dress, or simply knowing when to step back and let genuine moments unfold—those are the things experience teaches you.
My background in newspaper photography and journalism has also shaped how I approach weddings. Rather than forcing moments, I look for real emotion and authentic connections. Some of my favorite images are the ones that happen naturally.
What I’m most proud of isn’t the awards, although I’m incredibly grateful to have been recognized with The Knot Best of Weddings for 16 consecutive years, inducted into The Knot Hall of Fame, had my work published in numerous magazines, and received multiple writing and photography awards from the Virginia Press Association.
What means the most to me is the trust our clients place in us. Many of the couples we photographed years ago now return with their growing families, and there’s no greater compliment than being invited back to document multiple generations of life’s milestones.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
First and foremost, I’m grateful to the hundreds of couples and families who have trusted me over the years. It is your customers that make or break your business. You can be the best photographer there is, but if you do not have great customer service, that will quickly follow you and hurt your business.
I’m also incredibly thankful for my family. My husband Brian and daughter Casey. Building a business, especially one that works weekends and long hours, requires sacrifice from everyone around you. Their encouragement, patience, and belief in me have allowed me to continue pursuing a career that I truly love. My daughter also became my very first second shooter and worked with me for several years until she graduated from college.
Today, I’m especially grateful for the amazing team of photographers and videographers who represent Crystal Image Photography. Building a team wasn’t about growing bigger; it was about ensuring that every couple receives the same level of care, professionalism, and attention to detail that I’ve built my reputation on for more than 30 years. Watching my team grow, develop their talents, and serve our clients with excellence has been one of the most rewarding parts of this chapter of my career.
Finally, I believe every business owner needs people who encourage them through both the successes and the difficult seasons. Over the years, I’ve been blessed with mentors, fellow business owners, and friends who have shared advice, offered support, and reminded me to keep moving forward. Entrepreneurship can sometimes feel lonely, and having people who believe in you makes all the difference.
I may have started Crystal Image Photography by myself, but I certainly didn’t build it alone. Every client, teammate, mentor, friend, and family member has played a part in the story, and I’m incredibly grateful for each one.
