Hi Rachel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming a wedding photographer. I had a camera that I would pick up every now and then, but photography was just something I enjoyed casually. Everything changed when one of my friends got engaged and another asked me to photograph her wedding.
I have a bit of an all-or-nothing personality, so once I said yes, I dove in headfirst. I downloaded every editing program I could get my hands on, spent countless hours researching, watching tutorials, and practicing. I wanted to learn everything I possibly could.
From there, things happened pretty quickly. I started booking weddings, one after another, and before I knew it, photography had become so much more than a hobby. A couple of years later, I took the leap and went full-time.
Looking back, it’s funny that something so unexpected became my career. What I love most now isn’t just taking beautiful photos, it’s getting to know people, being invited into one of the biggest days of their lives, and creating images that will mean even more to them years down the road. I still approach every wedding with that same excitement I had when I first decided to jump in, and I don’t think that’ll ever change.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. Like a lot of people who start a creative business, I had to learn almost everything as I went. Photography is one thing, but running a business is something completely different. There were plenty of late nights spent figuring out contracts, pricing, editing workflows, taxes, marketing, you name it.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning not to compare myself to other photographers. It’s easy to look around and feel like everyone else is further ahead or has everything figured out. Over time, I’ve realized that every photographer has their own path, and trying to imitate someone else’s journey only takes away from your own.
I’ve also learned that growth rarely happens overnight. There have been slower seasons, moments of self-doubt, and times when I questioned whether I was good enough. But each challenge pushed me to become a better photographer, a better business owner, and honestly, a more patient person.
Looking back, I’m grateful it wasn’t a smooth road because those experiences shaped the way I serve my couples today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in weddings, and my favorite part of the job has always been the people. Every couple has a different story, different personalities, and different priorities, and I love getting to document all of that in a way that feels true to who they are.
I’d describe my style as loose editorial with a fashion-inspired influence. I love creating images that feel elevated and intentional. I want my couples to look like the best version of themselves while still leaving room for genuine moments to unfold naturally.
What I’m most proud of isn’t necessarily a single image, it’s the experience. I want my couples to feel comfortable enough to be fully present on their wedding day instead of worrying about how they look in front of the camera. When people feel at ease, the photos become so much more meaningful.
I think the relationships I build with my couples are a big part of my work. I take the time to get to know them so that when the wedding day arrives, it feels less like they’ve hired a vendor and more like they’ve invited someone they trust to tell their story.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
The word luck isn’t how I would describe my business successes. Looking back on my life and my business, I see God’s faithfulness far more than I see chance.
That doesn’t mean every opportunity has come easily or that every season has been successful. There have been disappointments, slower seasons, and moments where I wasn’t sure what was next. But in those moments, I’ve also seen doors open that I never could have planned for myself and opportunities arrive at exactly the right time.
I work hard and care deeply about what I do, but I also recognize that so much of where I am today is because of God’s provision. He’s placed incredible couples in front of me, surrounded me with people who have encouraged me, and continued to guide my business in ways I couldn’t have orchestrated on my own.
So if someone asked me what role luck has played in my business, I’d say it hasn’t been luck at all. I believe God has a plan, and His timing has been better than anything I could have mapped out for myself. Looking back, I can see that every closed door, every unexpected opportunity, and every season served a purpose, even when I didn’t understand it at the time.
