Today we’d like to introduce you to Zachary Barber.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I launched Yorktown Tools in 2025 while finishing my 20-year Army career. Once my retirement orders came through, I knew it was time to act. My goal was—and still is—to operate in that perfect “Goldilocks zone”: still employed by the Army while building momentum so I’m not starting from zero on day one of civilian life. Yorktown Tools began as a B2B operation without a retail storefront, with plans to expand when the timing is right. After considering lawn care and a Baltimore-style snowball stand, I chose tools. Those other paths felt too familiar, too seasonal, and faced heavy competition. My “Lawn Barber” branding idea was already taken, which helped clarify the decision. I dove into networking, branding, and long hours of work.At its core, Yorktown Tools exists to keep jobsites productive. Contractors shouldn’t lose hours chasing tools—with strong relationships and reliable service, we prevent workflow stoppages. For anyone considering the trades or entrepreneurship, it’s doable but it’s a grind. This business is ultimately more about relationships than the tools themselves.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing in business is truly smooth, especially when you don’t know what you don’t know. The tool industry has a high barrier to entry. Most major manufacturers require $50,000+ upfront, a brick-and-mortar storefront, ongoing sales thresholds, and other requirements—multiplied across multiple brands for customer choice. We’ve navigated this by getting creative: using wholesalers for one-off items, building inventory partnerships, and manufacturing our own consumables. My steady Army income has given me the flexibility to pursue this without immediate pressure on bills or insurance. A key example is our Victory Series work gloves. Gloves don’t have a shelf-life issue, so they help raise capital with lower risk while we work toward the bigger manufacturer requirements. Competing with big-box stores like Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Grainger is an ongoing challenge. The path evolves—short-term tactics change while long-term goals stay steady—but that adaptability is part of the journey.

Yorktown Tools as a brand is the combination of three things: my military service, the historical significance of the Seige of Yorktown during the American Revolutionary War and the Tool industry. (See mascot and logo)
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My whole life has prepared me for this moment, and so many people have played important roles. My family and friends have been incredibly supportive—they wear the gear, share posts, and help spread the word. My military experience, both the good and the challenging leadership moments, taught me discipline and resilience.A brother-in-law and a childhood friend still active in the tool industry have offered especially valuable insights from the field. The Yorktown Chamber of Commerce and the broader York County community have also been very receptive and encouraging. Manufacturer representatives who took time for candid conversations about requirements and tips were hugely helpful. The credit belongs to all of them. This has never been a solo effort.
