Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamain Gordon.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Believe it or not, my career path began to take shape when I was in the 8th grade after watching the movie Two Can Play that Game starring Vivica A. Fox. Seeing a strong Black woman commanding rooms and living an accomplished life, I wanted to be her. Years later when I entered undergrad, I held true to my first love and pursued my bachelor’s in Marketing. Over those four years I realized that marketing research was where I felt alive. it’s something about understanding why that lights a fire in me. That fire burned bright in and out of the classroom as I earned first place in the 2012 SEDSI Undergraduate Research Competition for my paper that explore consumer behavior based on tropes in advertising. This same research led me to being a co-author of a chapter in a scholarly textbook published by Palgrave Macmillan. Little did I know, a seed for Peach Fuzz Strategy Group was already being planted. Fast forward to 2022, when I began my master’s program in Digital Marketing & Data Analytics, everything became clear to me. Peach Fuzz Strategy Group was born through several assignments that stretched me and fed me as a marketer…as a data lover. And so it began, but suddenly my dream was on the line. I was working full time and was informed that I was in violation of our non-compete—despite not having any clients yet, or a solid business model. All I had was a website, but that was enough, I was given the option to take down the site and continue working, or to resign. I bet on myself, and even more importantly, I bet on God. I decided to resign and follow the path that had chosen me as a young girl at the age of 13.Since then, Peach Fuzz has continued to take shape around something that has always been true about me: I need to understand why. Throughout my career, I’ve watched organizations approach marketing from a tactics-first perspective, often jumping straight to solutions without fully understanding the problem they were trying to solve. Spend more. Launch something new. Change the messaging. Do more. But what if marketing isn’t actually the problem?
That question influences the way I work today. I bring my need for understanding into every client relationship, digging into the data, the customer and the business itself to uncover what’s really happening before deciding what should happen next. Peach Fuzz Strategy Group is the culmination of everything I’ve ever loved about marketing—research, data, creativity and the opportunity to solve a really good problem.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like anything great that you build yourself, the road hasn’t been smooth. I’ve struggled with balancing soloprenuership with having a family of 7. I’ve faced adversity by having to choose between working full time and being able to help support my family, or step out on faith and invest in myself. Thankfully I have a supportive family who believed in me and my abilities. Despite the financial constraints that come along with bootstrapping a business, I had their full support.
We’ve been impressed with Peach Fuzz Strategy Group, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
each Fuzz Strategy Group is a growth strategy consultancy that helps established businesses experiencing stagnant or declining revenue identify where they may be leaking revenue, understand why it’s happening and develop a strategy to address it.
What sets Peach Fuzz apart is how we approach growth. Businesses are often quick to jump to tactics—spend more, launch another campaign, change the messaging without first understanding the actual problem. We look across customer, operational and performance data to uncover the signals behind a revenue leak and determine what’s really getting in the way of growth.
I’m most proud that Peach Fuzz has stayed true to the way I naturally think and work: understand first, then act. The goal isn’t to give clients more things to do. It’s to give them clarity around what deserves their attention, time and resources so they can make smarter, more informed decisions about growth.
At the end of the day, you can’t fix a revenue leak you don’t understand. Peach Fuzz exists to help businesses find the why behind the leak and build the right strategy from there.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
In order for me to be successful, I have to have integrity, dedication, and a willingness to always learn something new. I don’t just create mundane, run of the mill strategies. I take it upon myself to think of the most logical and creative way for businesses to meet their customers’ needs. In order to do this, I have to be a continual learner, staying abreast on what’s going on in not just the marketing industry but also the industry of my clients. My clients come to me when they are vulnerable. If revenue is down, you need to know you’re working with someone who you can trust to get the job done, but more importantly someone who is going to always put your best interest first.
