Inspiring Conversations with Perry Mundy of Locomotion Orthotics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Perry Mundy.

Hi Perry, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a lifelong resident of Central Virginia, I’ve always been passionate about serving the community that shaped me. My career has been built on a passion for understanding human movement and helping people stay active. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Liberty University in 2003, followed by an Associate of Applied Science as a Physical Therapist Assistant from Jefferson College of Health Sciences in 2007. In 2010, I became a Certified Pedorthist, combining my background in rehabilitation with a specialized focus on foot and lower extremity biomechanics.

For nearly a decade, I practiced in an outpatient physical therapy setting, working closely with patients experiencing foot and ankle conditions. That experience gave me an in-depth understanding of foot and ankle pathomechanics and laid the foundation for designing effective custom foot orthotic interventions. I then spent nearly four years as the Pedorthist within a chiropractic practice, where I continued refining my patient-centered approach while collaborating with other healthcare professionals.

In 2023, I founded Locomotion Orthotics LLC in Forest, Virginia, to provide personalized foot orthotic and footwear solutions to patients throughout Central Virginia. My philosophy has always been that successful treatment begins with listening. Every patient deserves an individualized assessment that identifies the underlying cause of their pain, not just the symptoms. By combining education, clinical experience, and careful biomechanical evaluation, my goal is to help each patient move more comfortably, return to the activities they enjoy, and improve their overall quality of life

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has definitely not been smooth, but every challenge has helped shape me as both a clinician and a business owner. Like many healthcare professionals, I’ve had to continually learn, adapt, and grow as new opportunities and obstacles arose. Transitioning from working within established practices to opening my own business brought a whole new set of responsibilities beyond patient care—from building relationships with referral sources to learning the day-to-day aspects of running a business.

Those experiences have taught me the value of perseverance, lifelong learning, and staying humble. Every patient is unique, and there is always something new to learn. I’ve found that listening first, asking questions, and never assuming you have all the answers leads to better outcomes and stronger relationships. Looking back, every challenge has made me a better clinician and business owner, while reinforcing the reason I entered this profession in the first place: helping people move better, live with less pain, and enjoy a higher quality of life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Locomotion Orthotics was founded on the belief that every patient deserves personalized care—not a one-size-fits-all solution. The name “Locomotion” reflects what I strive to restore for every patient: comfortable, confident movement. Whether someone is an athlete, a person who spends long hours on their feet, or simply wants to enjoy a walk with family, my goal is to help them stay active and independent.

The brand is built on three core values: education, accessibility, and quality. I take the time to help patients understand why they’re experiencing pain and how their treatment plan addresses the underlying cause. A phrase I’ve jokingly heard over the years is that if someone asks me for the time, I’ll give them the history of the clock. While it gets a laugh, there is some truth behind it—I believe understanding the “why” is just as important as understanding the “what.”

Whether I’m explaining foot mechanics, discussing treatment options, or helping a patient understand their orthotic needs, I want them to be informed and confident in their decisions. By offering timely appointments, individualized biomechanical evaluations, and foot orthotic solutions ranging from customizable over-the-counter inserts to fully custom devices, I match each patient with the option that best fits their needs, lifestyle, and goals.

At Locomotion Orthotics, patients aren’t just another appointment—they’re treated as partners in achieving long-term mobility and a better quality of life. My goal is not simply to provide an orthotic solution, but to help each person understand their body, make informed decisions, and take the next step toward moving better.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can work with me in several ways: if you’re a patient looking for relief, I welcome the opportunity to help you find the right solution—whether that’s custom orthotics, customizable over-the-counter inserts, footwear recommendations, or simply an honest assessment of what will and won’t help. My goal is always to provide the most appropriate solution, not just the most expensive one.

Healthcare professionals are always welcome to collaborate. I enjoy partnering with physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors, podiatrists, and other providers who want a responsive resource for their patients. I believe the best outcomes happen when we combine our expertise and communicate openly.

The best way to support my work is simple: tell someone about it. A referral, a recommendation, or sharing your positive experience means more than any advertisement ever could. As a small, locally owned business, relationships and trust have been the foundation of every opportunity I’ve had, and I’m grateful for every person who places that trust in me.
