Today we’d like to introduce you to Mei Tomko.
Hi Mei, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Post Nostalgia Prints was created by Mei Tomko, a female artist based in the D.C. area.
I started drawing during early childhood, often choosing animals as my subject to create homemade animal species books using colored pencils and paper. As I grew older, I continued expanding my passion for art by teaching myself how to blend alcohol markers and then later watercolors. Today, I use a mixture of watercolor, markers, and ink to achieve unique layers and textures in my paintings.
I love combining food and landscapes with personified animals to create whimsical scenes that bring a sense of warmth and nostalgia to the viewer.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest challenge of navigating the journey to sharing my art has been discovering what I enjoy versus dislike.
I initially viewed success as a small artist to be having a successful online shop. I worked towards this milestone, researching building my own website and the best platforms to sell products, but found that I was dragging my feet because it felt more like work and less like a hobby.
However, I found that I gain energy from sharing my art in-person at events and guiding others to lean into their creativity through teaching watercolor workshops, as well as building relationships with local businesses to have my prints, stickers, and cards in their shops. I have since been leaning into these methods of sharing my work and re-ignited my creative spark!

I describe my artwork’s defining characteristics as personifying animals and breathing a whimsical nostalgic element into each scene I create, depicting surreal “terrarium-like” worlds with a children’s book style.
