Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Wilson.
Hi Courtney, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been that person who is constantly taking photos of everyone and everything! I’ve always believed that our memories won’t last forever, but photos will.
In May 2024, a friend of mine was pregnant and wanted maternity photos. I told her I had a little Canon DSLR camera and could probably follow a Pinterest board! A few days later, I took her photos and instantly fell in love with the experience, but even more than that, I fell in love with how it made my friend feel.
From there, things took off. I started offering free sessions in local Facebook groups. Before I knew it, I was photographing local families almost daily! At the time, I was working full time remotely as an audit analyst for IBM Pepsi-Co and my son was only 8 months old. I never expected this to become a full time career, just something fun to do on the side.
Shortly after, my own family photographer reached out and asked if my friend would be interested in newborn photos. She offered to show me the ropes of newborn photography to see if it was something I’d like. I took her up on the offer, because why not? Well.. I FELL IN LOVE immediately. As I continued booking more sessions, what started as a hobby quickly blossomed into a real business.
I decided to create social media pages to showcase my work but I needed a name for my photography business. After going back and forth on countless creative ideas, I finally asked my husband what he thought. His response?
“I don’t know, just keep it simple, babe.”
And just like that, it CLICKED.
Keep It Simple Photography was born.
In June 2025, IBM Pepsi-Co launched a branch wide layoff. Resulting in losing my full time job so I took it as a sign and decided to take the leap to go into photography full time! It was truly the best decision I’ve ever made.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely wasn’t a walk in the park. One of my biggest challenges was trying to be fully present for my own family while also dedicating so much time to capturing memories for other families. In the beginning, I was working evenings and weekends, which meant missing important moments with my own family.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in and most known for studio maternity, newborn, and milestone photography! As a mom myself, I know how quickly these seasons pass. One moment you’re soaking in those precious newborn snuggles, and before you know it, you’re celebrating milestones you never want to forget.
I’m truly most proud of my photography studio! I’ve worked so hard to make sure it not only has a smooth workflow for myself but a comfortable and inviting space for my clients. I personally think my studio helps me stand out from other photographers but I’ve never viewed myself “in competition” with anyone. We are all in the same profession but we’re all different in our own ways!
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Family dinners. My family would always sit down at the dinner table together, talk about our day, chat and spend quality time together while eating my mom’s home cooked meal!
