Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Bordwine.
Hi Megan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I opened my second hand used bookshop, The Book Cellar in 2023 with my husband Chad. I had mentioned the need for a bookstore in Abingdon and very soon after that the perfect spot became available and we’ve never looked back. I have always loved reading and am an avid thrifter.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have grown steadily. We started with four shelves and a table and have grown so much in the last 3 years.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Book Cellar?
We are a second hand bookshop, we strive to have as small of an environmental impact as possible, and are very passionate about conscious consumerism. Almost everything in our shop is second hand from the products to the decor. Each piece has its own story to tell.
In addition to our second hand books we host a variety of literary events such as writing workshops, open mic poetry nights, book fairs, and silent Bookclubs.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Our literary community. We have gotten to know and have made so many friends through their support of our business and attendance to our events we couldn’t do it without them.
We also have a wonderful partnership with our friends at Wolf Hills Coffee who we share a space with. Books and coffee are such a perfect pair!
I have worked very hard in creating the cozy and whimsical place that we are and I have loved doing so. I have put so much of myself into our business and it really shows. From our counter that was built by my dad to paintings painted by my grandmother. Our friends and family are just as much a part of the bookstore as we are and we are so grateful for them.
I could not do it without the help of my husband Chad. We are a second hand bookshop built on love.
