Today we’d like to introduce you to Peyton Whaley.
Peyton, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story really started with a love for the beauty industry and a dream of one day having something of my own. I always knew I wanted to build a career where I could be creative, connect with people, and make others feel confident and beautiful.
At a young age, I decided I didn’t want to wait until I was older to start pursuing that dream. I obtained my cosmetology license in high school. I then continued my education to acquire my master barber and aesthetician license. I worked as a booth renter for a year before I took the leap and opened Shear Grace Salon in Abingdon, Virginia.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business so young was definitely intimidating, and there have been plenty of challenges and learning experiences along the way. I’ve had to learn not only how to be a stylist and salon owner, but also how to manage a business, finances, clients, marketing, inventory, and all of the little things that people don’t necessarily see behind the scenes.
I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come, especially knowing that I started this journey as a young woman with a dream and a willingness to work for it. Owning my own business has taught me that you don’t have to have everything figured out before you begin. Sometimes you just have to believe in yourself enough to take that first step.
I’m very blessed with this profession. It has allowed me to purchase my own home at a young age also. I am still learning, still growing, and still dreaming bigger for Shear Grace. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me and hope that my story encourages other young people to believe that they can build something of their own, too.

At Shear Grace Salon, I specialize in creating a personalized experience for every client. We offer a variety of beauty services, including hair, nails, esthetics, makeup, and bridal services, so clients can come into one place and feel taken care of from start to finish.
What I love most about my work is that it goes beyond the actual service. Beauty is personal, and I want every person who sits in my chair to leave feeling more confident, comfortable, and like the best version of themselves. Building relationships with my clients and watching them trust me with some of their biggest moments is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
What I believe sets Shear Grace apart is the atmosphere. I want it to feel welcoming and personal rather than intimidating or impersonal. I’ve worked hard to create a space where people can come in, relax, be themselves, and know they’re genuinely cared about.
I’m also proud that Shear Grace represents more than just my own career. It represents what can happen when you’re willing to take a chance on yourself. I’m still young, and I’m still learning, but I think that’s part of what makes this journey so exciting. I’m not afraid to grow, try new things, and dream bigger.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I have so many it is hard to pick just one. One of my favorite parts of growing up was all the experiences I got to share with my family. One memory that really stands out is our family vacation to Disney with my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. We would all travel together, stay in the same hotel, visit the different parks, and just spend days laughing and having fun as a family. I especially remember the hotel that had a tram running right through the lobby. As a kid, I thought that was the coolest thing ever!
Another really special part of my childhood was performing in dinner theater from about the age of six until I was fourteen. I loved performing, and I still remember the excitement of getting to leave school early for rehearsals and performances. Even more special was having my family and friends come watch me perform. Having them there cheering me on made me feel so supported and proud.
When I look back, I think what makes these memories so special isn’t necessarily the places we went or the performances themselves. It’s that my family was always there. Whether they were traveling with me, sitting in the audience watching me perform, or simply making everyday moments fun, they encouraged me to try things, be confident, and enjoy life.
Those experiences definitely shaped who I am today. They taught me the importance of family, having confidence in yourself, and not being afraid to put yourself out there—which are things I carry with me now as a young business owner.
