Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Bocchi.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Amanda Bocchi. I’m a mother, musician, teacher and an insurance agent for Comparion Insurance in Roanoke, Virginia. I have 3 daughters 16, 14 and 5. Music has always been my greatest passion. I started playing guitar when I was 9. I graduated from Hollins University with a Bachelor of Arts- concentration in classical guitar, I have had a rather meandering career. I’ve been a guitar teacher, a choir director and praise and worship leader for small churches in SW Virginia. I started working for NPR in 2019 and developed an hour long radio program called Appalachian Vibes Radio Show. The purpose of the show is to challenge the expectations and celebrate the diversity of music, art and literature created in Appalachia. The past 4 years I’ve been a choir director for Roanoke City Schools, after a $16 million budget cut and arts funding cuts, I made the decision to move into the world of insurance with Comparion. It’s been a really exciting transition to work for Comparion Insurance- A Liberty Mutual company-and now I sell Life, Home, Auto and Small Commerical. I’m incorporating radio and insurance with events and it’s been really rewarding to use my creativity in new ways.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, and honestly, I’m grateful for that. Starting a career in insurance has been a tremendous learning curve, especially coming from a background in music, education and radio. I spent my twenties completing my education in classical guitar, with every intention of “making it”. I also struggled with addiction through those years and recently celebrated 10 years clean! The personal trials and tribulations I have overcome, came with divine help and the help of earth angels (AKA, Mom and my daughters). I ran into challenges with discovering how to collaborate my passion for music, education and making a viable income. The past 4 years I’ve been a choir director for Roanoke City Schools. A budget cut left me (and my family) without a path forward in music education. That’s when I was brought on to Comparion Insurance-a Liberty Mutual Company, and I have grown so much in a short period of time. I get to be creative with collaborating my personal passions and sales. But most importantly, it gives me the opportunity to help people by protecting the lives they have worked hard to build!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a guitar playing, radio show creating, insurance agent with Comparion. I sell Home, Auto, Small Commercial and Life. I specialize in protecting the lives and businesses people have worked hard to build! My passion in insurance surrounds small businesses. I believe small business is the backbone of our communities, and it’s important to me that owners who have put their blood, sweat and tears into their companies can protect what they have built! Often times businesses don’t know what they need as far as insurance is concerned, and I love to be the point person to support when they don’t know what they don’t know.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love living in SW Virginia. The views are stunning, the rivers are cold, we have amazing history in my region. And I love the people. What do I least enjoy about our city? The drought!
