Inspiring Conversations with Greg Goodson of Foxhaven Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Goodson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My path into photography started under the wide skies of eastern Colorado, where I spent time photographing storms. That experience taught me to pay close attention to light, weather, distance, and timing—skills that still shape how I approach every assignment. I continued developing my eye through landscape and bird photography, two disciplines that reward patience, preparation, and careful observation.

Foxhaven Photography began in 2020 when I started photographing short-term-rental properties for friends and family. I quickly realized that property photography brought together several things I cared about: creating strong images, understanding how people experience a place, helping small businesses market themselves effectively, and delivering a client experience built on reliability.

From those early projects, I grew into an owner-led photography business serving Charlottesville, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and communities across Central Virginia. Today I photograph real estate, short-term rentals, cabins, architecture, interiors, hospitality spaces, and commercial properties. I also provide aerial photography and video, cinematic property films, 360-degree virtual tours, floor plans, and twilight imagery.

The business has expanded, but the way I work has remained intentionally personal. I plan every shoot, photograph every property, edit every image, and manage every final delivery myself. That direct involvement helps me protect the consistency of the work and gives clients a straightforward relationship from the first conversation through the finished gallery. My goal is not simply to make a space look attractive, but to help viewers understand its layout, atmosphere, setting, and the experience it offers.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most small businesses, it has not been a perfectly smooth road. One of the first challenges was learning that being a good photographer and running a dependable photography business require two different skill sets. Alongside improving the creative work, I had to build systems for scheduling, contracts, licensing, property preparation, travel, delivery, and client communication. Those operational details are not the most visible part of the job, but they determine whether a client feels supported and whether a time-sensitive project stays on track.

Property photography also involves many variables that cannot be controlled. Weather changes, homes are not always ready on arrival, access plans shift, and the best light may last only a few minutes. Aerial work adds airspace and safety considerations, while real estate clients often need finished images on very short deadlines. I have learned to prepare carefully, communicate early, and stay flexible without letting those variables compromise the final result.

Another ongoing challenge has been growing the range of services while keeping the work consistent. I now offer photography, aerial imagery, video, virtual tours, floor plans, and twilight coverage, but I still personally oversee every assignment and final edit. That creates limits on how quickly I can expand, yet it is also one of the business’s strengths. I would rather grow deliberately, improve the systems behind the scenes, and maintain a high level of accountability than lose the owner-led experience clients value.

Each challenge has pushed me to become more organized, more adaptable, and clearer about the kind of business I want Foxhaven Photography to be: reliable, thoughtful, and built for long-term relationships.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Foxhaven Photography is a Charlottesville-based property photography business serving real estate professionals, short-term-rental hosts, builders, designers, property managers, hospitality teams, and commercial clients across Central Virginia and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

I specialize in photographing spaces in a way that is both polished and useful. For real estate, that means accurate composition, clear visual flow, dependable scheduling, and a cohesive set of MLS-ready images delivered quickly. For Airbnb, Vrbo, cabins, and boutique stays, the work becomes more experience-led: I spend additional time on amenities, lifestyle details, atmosphere, and the relationship between the property and its setting. Commercial assignments are planned around the client’s goals, intended audience, formats, and image usage.

I also provide FAA Part 107-certified aerial photography and video, cinematic property films, 360-degree virtual tours, schematic and premium floor plans, property maps, and natural or virtual twilight imagery. A basic schematic 2D floor plan is included with every interior photography booking, and standard photography is typically delivered within 24 hours. I am also a Zillow Showcase Approved Provider and use Zillow-compatible 360-degree equipment.

What sets me apart is the combination of a broad visual-marketing toolkit with a genuinely owner-led process. Clients do not plan with one person, meet another photographer on site, and receive images edited by someone they never spoke with. I personally manage the scope, photograph the property, edit the work, and deliver the final files. That continuity protects quality and makes communication much simpler.

I am most proud that the brand has grown around reliability rather than volume. The photographs need to be beautiful, but they also need to do a job: help a buyer understand a home, help a guest imagine a stay, help an architect or builder communicate craftsmanship, and give a business a durable library of images it can use with confidence. I’m also very proud of the tools I’ve built through my website to make it easy for my clients to book appointments and receive their photos at foxhavenphoto.com.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Start by becoming dependable, not by trying to look established. Skill matters, but clients also remember whether you communicated clearly, arrived prepared, respected their time, delivered when promised, and handled problems calmly. Those habits build a reputation faster than any piece of equipment.

I also wish I had understood earlier that a creative business needs systems. Put contracts, pricing, licensing, scheduling, backups, file delivery, and client expectations in writing. Good systems do not make the work less personal; they create the space to be more present and creative when you are actually working with a client.

Learn the fundamentals of your craft before chasing every new tool or trend. In photography, light, composition, timing, and consistency matter far more than owning the newest camera. At the same time, stay curious. The needs of clients change, and being willing to learn adjacent skills (video, aerial work, floor plans, virtual tours, marketing, or whatever supports your core service) can make your business more useful.

Finally, grow at a pace that allows you to protect the quality of both the work and the relationship. It is tempting to say yes to everything, but a clear point of view and a reliable process are more valuable than trying to serve everyone. Ask what the client is really trying to accomplish, make decisions around that goal, and treat every project as an opportunity to earn the next conversation rather than simply complete the current transaction.
