Today we’d like to introduce you to Araceli Colato.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey to Colato Compass began during my more than ten years working as a nanny. Over the last few years, I started noticing something that stayed with me. I worked with incredibly capable families who had the resources to create wonderful experiences for themselves and their loved ones, but they often simply did not have the time to manage all the details.
I would hear conversations about upcoming vacations, birthday gifts, anniversaries, holiday shopping, family celebrations, and events. Sometimes it was as simple as realizing, “The birthday is tomorrow. What are we going to get?” Other times, it was coordinating a birthday celebration, finding the right vendor, planning an experience, or figuring out all the details surrounding a trip. I began to realize there was a real need for someone who could step in and take ownership of those details.
I had so many business ideas that I would bring them home to my husband. At one point, I even suggested a mobile dog-grooming business. I love dogs, but I quickly realized that wasn’t where my passion was.
Eventually, I had the idea that would become the foundation of Colato Compass. Like many people starting something of their own, though, fear got in the way. I questioned myself constantly. Who would want to work with me? Who was I kidding? Because of those doubts, I started saying yes to almost everything and found myself working as a house manager. While that experience taught me a great deal, I eventually realized I was moving away from what I actually loved and what I was naturally good at.
Then I was introduced, through a dear friend, to an incredible woman who helped me see the idea more clearly. That conversation was a turning point. I finally understood that the heart of Colato Compass was not about simply getting tasks done. It was about becoming a trusted person behind the scenes who understands how someone lives, what they value, and what matters to them.
Today, Colato Compass is focused on gifting and experiences, event planning, travel coordination, and sourcing and coordinating trusted vendors. I work closely with my clients to learn their preferences and anticipate their needs, rather than simply waiting for a list of tasks.
I truly love what I do. For me, the most rewarding part is getting to know my clients well enough that I can make things feel effortless for them. Colato Compass has become the business I was trying to find all along, and I’m grateful that I finally had the courage to build it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road. One of my biggest struggles has been learning to trust myself.
When I first had the idea for Colato Compass, I had so many questions and doubts. I wondered who would want to work with me and whether I was really qualified to build the kind of business I envisioned. Instead of trusting my instincts, I started saying yes to almost everything because I was afraid of turning down opportunities. That eventually led me into house manager work, even though I knew deep down that it wasn’t where I wanted to take the business.
It took time for me to realize that saying yes to everything wasn’t the same as building the right business. I had to step back and really look at what I enjoyed, what I was naturally good at, and what I had been observing for years while working with families.
The biggest turning point was meeting someone who helped me see the potential in the original idea I had been carrying for years. That gave me the confidence to return to the core of what Colato Compass was always meant to be.
I’ve learned that building a business requires just as much personal growth as business strategy. I’ve had to become comfortable with defining my own path, setting boundaries around what I offer, and trusting that the right clients will value what I bring.
I’m still learning every day, but I no longer feel like I have to be everything to everyone. I know what I do well, I genuinely love doing it, and I’m much more confident about building Colato Compass around that.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Colato Compass is a private lifestyle concierge business built around one simple idea: people may have the resources to create a beautiful, meaningful life, but they don’t always have the time or mental space to manage all the details that make it possible.
At the heart of my business is a deep belief in the value of time, relationships, and experiences. My foundation is my faith in God and my love for family, and both have shaped the way I approach my work. I believe that life is meant to be lived and experienced, not spent constantly carrying a mental list of everything that needs to be done.
That is what I want to take away from my clients: the mental load.
I specialize in gifting and experiences, event planning, travel coordination, and sourcing and coordinating trusted vendors. Whether I’m finding the right birthday gift, coordinating a special celebration, helping plan a trip, or taking care of the details behind an important occasion, my goal is to take ownership of those details so my client doesn’t have to keep thinking about them.
What sets Colato Compass apart is that I don’t believe concierge service should feel transactional. I don’t simply ask, “What do you need me to do?” I want to know my clients. I learn their preferences, their personalities, the people who are important to them, the way they like to travel, the things they enjoy, and the little details that make something feel truly personal. Over time, that allows me to anticipate their needs instead of simply waiting for instructions.
For me, gifting is a perfect example of that. I don’t want to send a client five options and ask them to choose. I want to understand the person they’re giving to and find something that makes my client say, “Yes, that’s exactly right.” I want them to be able to trust that I’ve thought it through.
I’m also very intentional about the relationships I build with vendors and partners. I want my clients to have access to people I trust and to know that when I put my name behind a recommendation, I’ve taken the time to find the right fit.
What I’m most proud of about the Colato Compass brand is that it has become an extension of who I am. It is personal, relationship-driven, and grounded in service. I don’t want to build a business that simply helps people check things off a list. I want to be the person my clients can hand the details to and know that they are being handled.
If I can take something off a client’s plate so they can be more present for a birthday, enjoy dinner with their family, take a trip without worrying about the details, or simply have more room to breathe, then I feel that I’ve done what Colato Compass was created to do.
Ultimately, I want people to know that Colato Compass is about more than convenience. It is about giving people back their time, taking the mental load off their shoulders, and creating space for what matters most: their family, their relationships, their experiences, and the life they have worked so hard to build.
How do you think about luck?
I believe luck has played a role in my life, but I believe even more strongly in faith. I believe God has placed the right people in my path at the right time, often when I didn’t even realize how much I needed them.
There have definitely been moments when I felt incredibly fortunate, especially when I look back at the people God has brought into my life. One of the most important turning points in my business came through an introduction from a good friend. I met an incredible woman who helped me see my business in a completely different way. She helped me reconnect with the idea that had been in my heart all along. That meeting came at a time when I was struggling with doubt, and it gave me the clarity and encouragement I needed.
I also have an incredible husband who has supported me throughout this entire journey. He has heard it all: the exciting moments, the tough moments, the days I’ve been sad and discouraged, the times a door has closed, and the moments when a new one has opened. I’ve brought him countless ideas over the years, and he has listened to every one of them, even the mobile dog-grooming idea! Having someone beside me who believes in me through all of the highs and lows has meant more than I can put into words.
I also have an amazing, close circle of friends who have been there cheering me on. They have pushed me when I’ve doubted myself, encouraged me when things felt difficult, celebrated the wins with me, and have had a front-row seat to watching me grow. They have seen the business evolve, but they’ve also seen me grow personally through the process. I’m incredibly grateful for the people who have continued to remind me of what I’m capable of, especially on the days when I couldn’t see it myself.
There were certainly moments that felt like setbacks. I struggled with fear and questioned myself constantly. I wondered who would want to work with me and whether I was really capable of building the business I envisioned. Because of that fear, I started saying yes to everything and took on work that wasn’t truly aligned with where I wanted Colato Compass to go.
Looking back, I don’t necessarily see those experiences as bad luck. They taught me what wasn’t right for me and helped me understand what was.
My faith has taught me that not every open door is necessarily the right door, and not every closed door means you’ve failed. Sometimes God uses the detours to prepare you for where you’re actually meant to be.
So yes, I have been fortunate. I’ve met the right people, I’ve had clients who believed in me, and I’ve been given opportunities I could never have planned for myself. But I also believe that faith requires action. I have to show up, take the risk, keep going when I’m afraid, and trust the direction I’m being led.
When I look at where I am today, I don’t think I got here by luck alone. I believe God has been guiding me, placing the right people on my path, and giving me the courage to recognize the opportunities when they came.
Some of the most meaningful parts of my journey are things I never could have planned. And I’m grateful for that.
