Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Murray.
Hi Jonathan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I actually went to college for marketing, but my career didn’t start there. I spent a lot of my early professional life in customer service, sales, and management. Looking back, I think that experience ended up making me a better marketer because I learned how to listen to people, understand what they actually need, communicate clearly, and connect business goals to real people.
Eventually, I found my way back into marketing, and it felt like a natural combination of everything I had learned along the way. I’ve worked in sales, account management, client strategy, and marketing leadership, with a lot of my recent experience focused on helping businesses and law firms figure out how to get more from their marketing.
Today, a big part of what I do sits at the intersection of marketing strategy and the client experience. I enjoy looking at the full picture, from SEO and AI search to content, advertising, intake, and conversion, and figuring out how those pieces actually work together.
I’m also someone who enjoys creating and building things outside of my day-to-day work. Whether it’s content, podcasting, or my own projects, I’ve always had that entrepreneurial and creative side.
My career hasn’t been a straight line back to what I studied in college, but I actually appreciate that. The time I spent in sales, customer service, and leadership gave me a perspective on marketing that I don’t think I would have developed otherwise.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. There have been times in my career when I felt overlooked for promotions or like ideas I believed in weren’t really being heard. Those moments were frustrating, but they also pushed me to trust my own perspective more and continue developing my skills instead of letting someone else’s recognition determine my value.
There have also been challenges outside of work that changed how I think about success. My wife was unexpectedly let go from her job at one point, and that created a lot of financial pressure for our family. During times like that, it’s easy to feel like your only responsibility is to work more and provide more.
But one of the biggest things I’ve had to learn is how to balance that responsibility with being the kind of father and husband I want to be. There have been periods when my workload took up more of my time than I wanted it to, and I had to remind myself that being a good father means more to me than simply being a breadwinner. I want to be present and active in my kids’ lives too.
I’m still ambitious and I still work hard, but those experiences have helped me develop a healthier definition of success. I want to build a great career and provide for my family, but I also want to be there to actually enjoy the life I’m working so hard to build.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m a Marketing Director at Legends Legal Marketing, a full-service marketing agency focused specifically on law firms. In my role, I work closely with our clients on strategy while helping oversee how the different pieces of their marketing work together. Legends helps firms with everything from SEO and local search to paid advertising, content, social media, video, PR, intake, and increasingly AI search optimization.
What I appreciate most about Legends is that we don’t look at those services in isolation. Getting more traffic or leads is great, but if those leads aren’t turning into conversations and ultimately clients, we need to understand why. That means looking at the website, marketing strategy, intake process, follow-up, and overall client experience together.
I think another thing that sets us apart is how much we try to understand the individual firm. Two personal injury firms may practice the same type of law, but that doesn’t mean they have the same goals, personality, market, or definition of success. A big part of my role is having those conversations with our clients and making sure the strategy actually reflects who they are and where they want to go.
I’m especially proud of the direction we’re taking with AI and the changes happening in search. The way people find information is changing quickly, and law firms are having to think beyond traditional Google rankings. We’re helping our clients understand how authority, content, reviews, PR, local presence, and their overall digital footprint influence whether search engines and AI platforms recognize and recommend them.
At the end of the day, I want people to know that Legends isn’t just trying to sell law firms more marketing. We want to understand what they’re trying to accomplish and build a strategy around that.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is my family, being present, and actually enjoying the life I have.
I’m an ambitious person. I have goals for my career, my finances, and things I still want to accomplish. But I’ve realized I don’t want to spend so much time focused on what’s next that I miss what’s happening right now.
That applies to my family, but it also applies to me. I want to have new experiences, explore new interests, travel, create things, play games, try something I’ve never done before, or just enjoy an activity without feeling like it needs to be productive. I think there’s value in doing something simply because it makes you happy.
I want my kids to remember that I was there and that we experienced life together, not just that I worked hard to provide for them.
I still believe in working hard and building toward something bigger. I just don’t want my entire life to become about achieving the next thing. There’s a lot about my life right now that I’m grateful for, and I want to experience as much of it as I can while continuing to grow into the person I want to be.
