Today we’d like to introduce you to Diloro Norrmatova.
Hi Diloro, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey to ORO Sweets did not begin in a professional kitchen. It began around the tables of my childhood in Tajikistan, where food was never simply something we served it was how we welcomed people, celebrated life, and made others feel that they belonged.
Professionally, I followed a very different path. For more than 20 years, I worked in international development, diplomacy, and humanitarian assistance, including roles with the U.S. Embassy, the United Nations, and USAID. My work took me across countries and cultures and allowed me to support communities facing some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable. It was deeply meaningful, but also demanding. Baking became my creative escape a space where I could slow down, work with my hands, and create something beautiful that brought people immediate joy.
I founded ORO Sweets in 2022 while still working full-time. Even the name is deeply personal: ORO comes from my own name, DilORO. My name has Persian roots and means “beautiful heart,” with ORO representing beauty. It was a wonderful coincidence to later discover that “oro” also means “gold” in Spanish. Together, those meanings perfectly reflect what I want the brand to represent—beauty, warmth, and something golden created with care.
ORO began as a licensed home-based bakery offering handcrafted, European-inspired desserts, custom cakes, and elegant dessert experiences throughout Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area. When my federal career ended unexpectedly, ORO became more than a creative passion it became the next chapter of my life.
I began asking myself how I could combine my professional experience connecting people across cultures with my love of baking and hospitality. That question helped ORO evolve beyond simply selling desserts.
Today, ORO Sweets creates custom desserts, private and corporate experiences, pop-ups, and hands-on culinary workshops designed to bring people together. I recently launched “Flavors Around the World,” an experience series that introduces guests to different cultures through desserts, traditions, and storytelling. The first experience celebrates Central Asia and allows me to share the flavors, hospitality, and stories of the region where I was born.
Looking back, I realize that although my career changed, my purpose did not. Throughout my humanitarian work, I was always building connections and creating spaces where people from different backgrounds could come together. With ORO Sweets, I am still doing that I have simply found a different table around which to do it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth or predictable road. For the first several years, I was building ORO Sweets while working full-time in a very demanding humanitarian career. Most of the baking, planning, customer communication, and business development happened early in the morning, late at night, or on weekends. I had the creative vision, but I also had to teach myself how to price products, market a brand, manage social media, navigate licensing requirements, and turn a passion into a sustainable business.
One of the biggest challenges has been helping people understand that ORO is not simply another home bakery. The market is crowded, and competing only on price is not sustainable especially when each dessert is handcrafted with high-quality ingredients and requires significant time and skill. I had to become much clearer about what makes ORO different: we are creating an experience centered on beauty, hospitality, culture, and human connection, not just selling something sweet.
My unexpected transition out of federal service was another major turning point. After spending more than 20 years building a meaningful professional career, suddenly having to redefine myself was emotionally difficult. At the same time, it gave me the opportunity and the push to take ORO more seriously and imagine what it could become.
There have also been events that did not sell as expected, ideas that looked wonderful on paper but did not connect with customers, and many moments of doubt. As a small-business owner, you wear every hat: baker, marketer, photographer, event planner, salesperson, accountant, and sometimes delivery driver all in the same day. I have learned not to treat every setback as a final verdict. Sometimes an idea needs better timing, clearer messaging, a different audience, or the courage to let it go.
The greatest lesson has been that progress is rarely a straight line. I am still learning, adjusting, and rebuilding when something does not work. The challenges have made me more intentional about the kind of business I want to create one that grows sustainably, stays true to its purpose, and gives people something meaningful to gather around.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
ORO Sweets is a boutique dessert and culinary-experience company based in Ashburn, Virginia, serving Northern Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C. area. We specialize in handcrafted, European-inspired desserts, custom cakes, elegant dessert collections, corporate gifting, private events, and interactive culinary workshops.
Our desserts combine familiar flavors with refined presentation. From tiramisu, mousse cakes, trifles, and macarons to custom celebration cakes and seasonal collections, everything is made in small batches with high-quality ingredients and careful attention to detail. We want each creation to taste as memorable as it looks.
What truly sets ORO apart, however, is that we do not think of dessert as simply a product. We use food as a way to create experiences, introduce cultures, and bring people together. Our workshops are designed to feel warm, social, and welcoming not like formal cooking classes. Guests make something beautiful while sharing stories, enjoying food, and connecting with people they may not have known before arriving.
That philosophy inspired our signature series, “Flavors Around the World,” which allows guests to experience different cultures through desserts, regional food, traditions, and storytelling. The series begins with Central Asia, the region where I was born, and gives me an opportunity to share a culture that is rich in history and hospitality but is still unfamiliar to many people in the United States.
I am most proud that ORO is becoming more than a bakery. It is becoming a bridge between cultures and a space for meaningful human connection. Whether we are creating a custom dessert table, leading a corporate team-building experience, or welcoming guests to one of our cultural events, the intention is always the same: to make people feel special, connected, and beautifully cared for.
ORO Sweets currently offers custom orders, private and corporate workshops, special-event collaborations, seasonal collections, catering, and curated dessert gifts. As we continue to grow, my vision is to build ORO into a recognizable experiential brand where food, culture, creativity, and community come together.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is not one specific day, but the many afternoons I spent experimenting in our kitchen in Tajikistan. This was before the internet, during the difficult years following the civil war, when ingredients were limited and finding a recipe was not as simple as searching online.
I loved discovering old recipe books and trying to recreate whatever caught my imagination. Many ingredients were unavailable, so I learned to improvise with what we had. The results were not always good and the kitchen was usually a complete mess but my family supported every attempt. They tasted everything, encouraged me, and somehow found something positive to say even when a dessert clearly had not worked.
What I remember most is the laughter. Those imperfect cakes brought us around the table and gave us moments of joy during a challenging time. Looking back, I think that is where the heart of ORO Sweets began: with curiosity, creativity, limited resources, a messy kitchen, and a family that made me believe something beautiful could come from simply trying.
