Rising Stars: Meet Shelley Blankinship of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelley Blankinship.

Hi Shelley , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After a surprising cancer diagnosis when my kids were small, I began a health journey that forever changed our family. Realizing that so many things in my environment were not only harmful and carcinogenic, they were also LEGAL… and they were abundant in my pantry, medicine cabinet and cleaning closet. Things like…

Aspartame & sucralose in all of my “health” food and drinks;

Bleach, ammonia, sodium hydroxide & other harmful chemicals in cleaning supplies;

Parabens, formaldehyde, polyethylene & oxybenzone in toiletries & makeup;

Fluoride, mercury, lead, arsenic and chlorine in tap water.

The more I changed, the more I wanted to change. And I began to realize that not only were my clean living decisions positively impacting my families’ health, but they were also positively impacting the environment.

Gradually the benefits of living clean began to pay off. My husband was able to come off of his cholesterol medication. My daughter’s seasonal allergies subsided, and my sons eczema is a non-issue. And I’ve been cancer-free for over a decade!

Next thing I knew, I had become the go-to source for my friends, family, and coworkers when it came to all things health and wellness. I became so passionate about what I was learning and experiencing that I decided this was what I wanted to do with my life. I became certified as a holistic nutritionist and have never looked back.

Today, I truly love what I do. There is nothing more rewarding to me than helping people understand that they have options and that their bodies are capable of so much more than they may have been led to believe.

So often, we’re exposed to toxins, pathogens, and other stressors in our everyday environment that can place an enormous burden on the body. When we identify and address those factors, make the right nutritional and lifestyle changes, and give the body the support it needs, it can begin to function more optimally, often allowing people to feel dramatically better.

My goal is to help people take back their health and realize they don’t have to feel like victims of their symptoms, their circumstances, or simply their genetics. There are often things we can do to support the body and create meaningful change, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to help people discover those options.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I launched my business at the very beginning of COVID, which turned out to be an incredibly unique and opportune time. People were suddenly more curious than ever about their health and were looking for ways to optimize their immune systems and overall wellness. As conversations around prevention, prophylactics, and alternative approaches to health became more mainstream, it also opened the door to conversations about parasites, something I educate people extensively about through my social media and my work with clients.

While many businesses were facing incredibly difficult circumstances during that time, it created a very unexpected opportunity for me. I went from feeling like I was on an island all by myself, living a holistic lifestyle that not many people around me understood, to suddenly connecting with a massive community of like-minded people from all over the country and even around the world.

It was such a refreshing and rewarding experience to realize that I wasn’t alone. There were so many people asking the same questions, looking for the same answers, and wanting to take a more proactive role in their health. Building that community during such an unusual time is something I’ll always be incredibly grateful for.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I truly believe chronic disease traces back to toxins, pathogens, chronic stress/trauma, and nutritional deficiencies. When we identify those underlying burdens, support the body’s natural detoxification pathways, address nutritional deficiencies, regulate the nervous system, and learn how to eat and live more cleanly, the body has a much better opportunity to function the way it was designed to.

Functional medicine has been great at helping people look beyond symptoms and investigate what may be happening beneath the surface. But one piece I often see missing is detoxification. It is a huge part of what I do because we are living in an environment where our exposure to chemicals and environmental pollutants is greater than ever. Our food is laden with pesticides and other chemical residues, our water has pharmaceutical and industrial contaminants, we are surrounded by electromagnetic fields, and we’re exposed to microplastics and forever chemicals in our clothing.

When you consider the sheer number of exposures our bodies have to process, it’s not surprising that so many people feel overwhelmed, depleted, and unwell. And while our liver, kidneys, digestive tract, lungs, and skin are incredibly sophisticated detoxification and elimination systems, they still need the nutrients and support required to do their jobs effectively.

That’s where I feel my approach is different. Yes, I can utilize functional testing and recommend targeted supplements, just like many functional and integrative practitioners do. But I put a tremendous amount of emphasis on helping people reduce their toxic burden and properly support the body’s pathways of elimination. I want to help people identify what may be putting stress on their system, support the liver and kidneys, keep the bowels moving, support the skin and lymphatic system, and encourage healthy sweating and elimination while also making sustainable diet and lifestyle changes that reduce the burden going forward.

And the transformation can be remarkable. When you begin removing some of the things that are placing unnecessary stress on the body while giving it the nutritional and lifestyle support it needs, people are often amazed by how much better they can feel.

Another thing that is really important to me is accessibility. I don’t believe people should have to spend thousands of dollars or commit to expensive memberships and subscriptions just to get guidance and support. I try to keep my approach simple, practical, and affordable. I offer different levels of support depending on what someone needs, from people who are comfortable implementing a plan on their own to those who want more one-on-one guidance and hand-holding along the way.

Ultimately, my goal is to make this information accessible and actionable. I want people to understand that they have options, that there are things they can do to support their own health, and that taking control of your health doesn’t have to be complicated, overwhelming, or financially out of reach.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Don’t be freaked out, but there’s a good chance you’ve encountered parasites at some point in your life. And contrary to what many people have been led to believe, parasites aren’t limited to the digestive tract. Depending on the organism, they can affect different parts of the body, including tissues, organs, blood and brain. That’s one reason the symptoms associated with parasitic infections can be so varied.

There are the more obvious digestive dysfunction symptomsn (bloating, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, etc) but the list extends far beyond the gut. People can experience things like brain fog, fatigue, mood changes like anxiety and depression, sugar cravings, difficulty LOSING weight, joint pain, insomnia, migraines, skin issues, autoimmune conditions and a variety of other symptoms that can be difficult to connect to a single underlying cause.

One of the challenges is that conventional parasite testing has limitations, and a negative test doesn’t always provide a definitive answer. As a result, parasites may not be the first thing considered when someone has persistent or unexplained symptoms.

If you’ve been dealing with lingering symptoms and haven’t been able to get satisfying answers, this is something I’d be happy to help you explore. I also have a quick, simple quiz that’s often eye-opening. It looks at your symptoms and patterns and can give you an idea of whether parasites may be something worth investigating further.

Sometimes the first step toward finding answers is simply knowing what questions to ask.
