Conversations with Adrian Mccavitt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian Mccavitt.

Adrian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Nearly eleven years ago, my partner Lauren and I founded The Yoga Dojo in Scott’s Addition after years of teaching across the greater Richmond area. We wanted a single home where our community could gather, navigate life’s challenges, and build an inner peace that ripples outward.
As our community grew, so did our vision. In 2022, we moved to a larger space in Richmond’s near West End to accommodate growing class sizes and expand our holistic offerings. There, we launched Theta Wellness, a spa offering therapeutic, deep tissue, and Swedish massage, alongside acupuncture, esthetics, and infrared sauna.
Together, The Yoga Dojo and Theta Wellness allow us to deepen our mission: helping our community find world peace through inner peace.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There will always be struggles, high and low points, and love and loss, because the journey of running a yoga studio and wellness spa is a metaphor for life itself. Through it all, we stay grounded in our mission of service, which unifies our team and guests. Ultimately, we aim to move beyond rugged individualism and come together around a shared vision: living a happy, healthy, and content life. That unifying thought alone gets us through the challenges that life throws our way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Over the past 15 years, I have specialized in handbalancing, a movement art reminiscent of Cirque du Soleil, like ballet but performed in a handstand.
Practicing this discipline taught me patience, self compassion, and the truth that the creative process is heavy on the process, and you should never judge a movement or creative project while it is still evolving.
These lessons directly inform my teaching. The emotional tools I forged through my own practice allow me to be a better guide to each student, toward whatever level of mastery they hope to achieve. I found the depth of your philosophy in the creative process correlates to the depth that you’re able to achieve in your chosen discipline.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I am constantly learning and practicing whether reading, listening to podcasts, or meditating. A few books that have deeply influenced me include No Self, No Problem by Chris Niebauer, The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer, Being You by Anil Seth, and Waking Up by Sam Harris (whose meditation app I also use). I truly believe that ongoing self improvement and self education are among the most impactful investments we can make for ourselves and those around us.
