Inspiring Conversations with Kate Bowman of Wildly Rooted Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Bowman.

Hi Kate , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always wanted to own and run a small outpatient therapy practice. I had some amazing mentors in the field and was able to see first hand things that worked for them and on the flip-side see the things they learned from. I started in a small one room office in Elkton, Virginia until I grew and ended up moving to Harrisonburg. I have always loved the mentoring part of the field so I started taking interns and residents. That made the business kind of explode. At one time we had nine therapist here! Now we have four therapists and two interns. It’s literally been a dream come true!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Owning a small business is not for the faint of heart. There have been ups and downs and hard things that have come up. But I have an amazing support team–professionally and personally–that have helped me through every hard thing that life has thrown at us! We had a few growing pains when we didn’t have enough room [while waiting on the next suite beside up to open up] but we worked through it. Creating a business from the ground up is time consuming, hard, confusing, amazing, and all the things in between!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Wildly Rooted Counseling?
Wildly Rooted Counseling was established in 2019 after I got my masters and became a counselor. I wanted to create a space for therapists to work and clients to come to that met each of their needs. I wanted therapists to have the flexibility to learn and grow through their residency by bouncing things off of each other and their supervisor. And I also wanted a space for clients to be able to get the care their needed based off of their individual needs.

We are a trauma informed practice that works with people of all ages. We specialize in working with children and families. We have therapist that use DBT, OCD specialized services, EMDR therapy, and play therapy. We also have several therapists that are trained in coparenting and high conflict issues [related to divorce and custody issues].

My background is in social work and am passionate about working with low socio-economic status individuals particularly foster and adoption and medicaid population. I am an expert in trauma and am an expert witness in several local court systems related to trauma and children.

We work hard to meet the client where they are and provide the best care possible based off of their needs.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
When I was young we would go to my grandparents house on Sunday evenings and order pizza. All my aunts and uncles came and and all my cousins were there. We would laugh and joke and have the best time!
