Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Richmond.
Becca, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I picked up a camera in May of 2025 after having my baby almost a year prior. I was just simply a mom that sort of lost all sense of self that first year and I was searching for some kind of creative outlet. Something to get me out of the house and allow me to be Becca again. Anyone who knows me, knows that I create. I’m always doing something, making something or planning something. I loved myself as a mom but I just needed to find a piece of myself outside of that. So, I started out photographing families, couples, maternity sessions and really anyone who trusted me enough to get in front of my camera while I figured out what I was doing!
Over the last year, Richmond Roots Photography has grown and evolved right alongside me. I’ve spent countless hours learning, practicing, finding locations, developing my editing style, and figuring out what kind of photographer I truly want to be. Along the way, I discovered a particular love for photographing seniors and couples. I love capturing a story within a couple. The way they fit together, the way they look at each other and laugh together. My seniors are so fun and I never expected that I would end up really taking my senior work as far as I have! It just sort of happened and I adore photographing them!
What started as a creative outlet has become something I genuinely never expected. I’ve had the opportunity to photograph so many incredible people, work at beautiful locations throughout the Richmond area, and watch this little business grow into something I hope to eventually pursue full-time.
I still feel like I’m at the beginning of my story, which is probably my favorite part. There is so much I still want to learn and create, and when I look back at where I started compared to where I am now, I’m incredibly proud of how far Richmond Roots has come in such a short amount of time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
You know that feeling of trying to complete as many tasks as you can before the microwave beeps? That’s me 24/7. Honestly, I probably would have given up by now if it weren’t for the unwavering support of husband, my mom and my best friend Erika. They’ve all pushed me and encouraged me to keep going through my hardest moments. Juggling it all came be so completely overwhelming.
I still struggle everyday to balance everything. I’m still working a full-time job while growing Richmond Roots, and I’m also a wife and mom to my whole world, Emmatt. There have definitely been seasons where I’ve stretched myself a little too thin trying to give 100% to all of those things at once. I’ll always carry guilt for being away and I try so hard to take my days off to spend with my son and soak up every second of those days.
I’ve also had to learn that running a creative business requires boundaries. Saying no, valuing my time and work, handling cancellations or difficult situations, and realizing that I can’t be the right photographer for everyone have all been lessons I’ve had to learn along the way.
I’m still learning constantly, but I’ve become much more confident in my work, my decisions, and the direction I want Richmond Roots to go. Although, I am always trying to beat the microwave at the end of the day.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Richmond Roots Photography specializes in senior portraits, couples and maternity photography throughout the Richmond, Virginia area. My work is warm, romantic and story driven, with a mix of naturally prompted moments and more intentional, editorial style portraits.
One of my favorite parts of what I do is creating the entire vision for a session. I spend a lot of time scouting locations, thinking about how an outfit will photograph in a particular setting, watching the light, and finding little ways to make each session feel different. I’ve built a collection of locations around Powhatan and Richmond that range from open fields and gardens to historic architecture and more. I love being able to help someone choose a location and style their session around the feeling they want their photos to have.
Seniors have become an especially big part of Richmond Roots. I love giving them an experience that feels elevated and exciting while still letting their individual personality come through. I love frolicking in the fields with my girls!!
Couples are where I really fell in love with the storytelling side of photography. I want couples to be able to look back at their gallery and remember what that season of their relationship felt like, not just what they looked like. Whether it’s an engagement, proposal, anniversary or simply documenting their life together, I want the experience to feel like them rather than a long list of poses. I have spent the last two summers capturing countless couples and there’s just something about that feeling of summer love. It photographs so beautifully.
What I’m most proud of, though, is how quickly I’ve found my own creative voice. Photography is an industry where it can be very easy to compare yourself to everyone around you, and I’ve worked hard to create images that feel recognizably mine. I’m constantly learning and evolving, but I never want to lose the part of this that made me fall in love with it in the first place which is creating something beautiful out of an ordinary moment and giving someone photographs they’ll still care about years from now.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I’ve learned so many lessons in a very short amount of time, but I think the biggest has been learning to give myself grace. I’m only one person, and I’m slowly accepting that I’m probably never going to have everything completely together and that’s okay.
I’m building a business while working a full-time job, being a wife, raising my son, maintaining a home, and still trying to be an actual person somewhere in between. Some days I feel like I’m doing a great job balancing it all, and other days my house is a mess and I’m throwing dinner in the oven as I’m walking out the door for a session, knowing I probably won’t sit down to eat until 9:30 that night.
I’ve had to learn that I can be incredibly passionate about photography without expecting perfection from myself in every other area of my life. Sometimes I’m going to fall behind. Sometimes I’m going to make mistakes. Sometimes I’m going to have to say no. And sometimes something simply isn’t going to get done.
I think I used to believe that eventually I would figure out how to perfectly balance everything. What I’m learning instead is that balance doesn’t always mean everything gets an equal piece of me every day. Some days my business needs more of me, some days my family does, and some days I need to give a little more back to myself. I’m still learning that I don’t have to have it all together to be proud of what I’m building.
