Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Treacy.
Hi Greg, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story begins when i was a teenager. When i got my first phone that was able to take pictures, i started capturing the world around me. Fast forward to 2019, I got enough money and bought myself my first DSLR camera. I started doing photos of nature and mountains when I took my first trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Later in 2019, i proposed to my wife, Angela. During the wedding planning, the wife knew I knew more about photography so she let me research wedding photographers. During this process I got to see wedding photos and albums from other photographers. Photos that were so breath taking and emotional. Covid hit in 2020 which gave us more time for planning and over this time i was talking with our wedding photographer about what its like to do that kind of job. My passion for photography grew so much, I wanted to make a career out of it. In November 2021, the wife and I got married. On the wedding day, I got to see the equipment and routine of a wedding photographer. In the following days, I started my photography business. I started doing some small events to gain a portfolio and after a while, I booked my first wedding. It was that first wedding that really solidified my passion for wanting to do wedding photography. Hearing the bride and grown share their vows and getting to capture that moment was emotional to me. I realized i wanted to do this and that’s where my heart was. Over the next several years through today, I’ve been so grateful for all the wonderful couples that allowed me to share in their big day and to help capture the memories. Part of who I am as a photographer and being newly married myself, is priding myself on connecting with the couples. I’m not just a wedding photographer you hired just to capture your wedding and then leave. I’m here to help you get comfortable in front of the camera, connect with you and to make sure this moment is as perfect as it can be. I pride my business on putting the couple first and providing a smooth experience that the couple will enjoy. It’s truly amazing how many fun and unique weddings are out there and being able to photograph these memories that will sit with the couples for years and years to come.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wish I could say this has been an easy fairytale dream come true. It’s hard to find something you love doing and making a career out of it and it not be stressful. Hampton Roads is very dense with wedding photographers. Constantly, finding new ways to find couples and book them is the most difficult thing. Having to convince couples you are worth the money they are spending is stressful. It’s like one wrong word and the couple will move on to the next photographer in their inbox. In recent years, it has been really hard because AI is becoming bigger and bigger. People are convinced they can just have a family member take photos on their hobby camera or phone and use AI or quick editing tools to get the same results as a real wedding photographer and save them thousands of dollars. That’s simply never going to be better. AI doesn’t know the couple like I do. AI will never have communication and know how of the client to yield the same results as me. It’s a double edged sword. In the end, all of these things are hard to overcome but it also makes the process much more enjoyable and prideful. The couples that recognize the industry and are accepting of the processes just make this much more enjoyable and worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a wedding and event photographer. I specialize in true to life photography. What that means to me is that I like to capture the couple’s day as genuinely as possible. True smiles not forced. Special moments that are captured without a command or looking at the camera. I still do everything traditional that a wedding photographer does but I like to take a laid back approach and step in when I need to. I’m trigger happy with my camera so I’m always snapping photos of all the moments at a wedding. My editing style is more relaxed as well. I have seen tons of amazing wedding photos from other photographers. The photos are great but my problem is the photos are so heavily edited it doesn’t feel genuine to me. I like the memories to be a better representation of the day. I edit the photos only as much as I need. I’m know for being relaxed and friendly. I’m being hired by the couple so I like to listen to them as much as possible and create that connection that I feel like a lot of other wedding photographers forget. The name of my business is Whovian Photography which comes from my love for the British TV series Doctor Who. The show has made my personality alot of what it is today. I wanted to incorporate that into my business when I was creating it. I have alot of couples that ask about the name and it either goes one of two ways. They have never heard of it and want to know what the name is or they have heard of Doctor Who and love the name and references that I use. The later of these two creates a instant bond between me and couple. Couples tend to love this because it’s different. It’s not the cliche using a person’s name for the name of the business. I like to be different and I think alot of my couples and other clients like that and remember me for it. This is a really great feeling and makes me feel like I’m creating something positive and helpful in this world.
What matters most to you? Why?
The couple and client is what matters most to me. I want to make my wedding couples feel as special as they can on their big day. This is their big day so I want to capture all of their moments. For my photoshoot and event clients, I want to put them in the spotlight and make the photoshoot all about their personality and how they can show it in their photos. I like paying attention to every detail especially during a wedding. I want my couples to be open and comfortable being around a camera so that way every pose and smile is genuine and not forced. I want to provide the best experience I can for anyone who gets in front of the camera.
