Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Hinson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I learned how to play the violin in the third grade in the public school system in North Carolina. I participated in orchestras, ensembles, symphonies, and chambers subsequently performing in concerts, contests, and social events. It wasn’t until I went to college at Campbell University, and studied privately with a professor, that I noticed that I had endured a defective, sub-standard education. When you’re in a class of 30 or more musicians the fundamentals and key elements of the basics are often overlooked, resulting in a lack of thorough music theory. I wasn’t holding my violin properly, which resulted in incorrect posture and constant discomfort. Plus injury. Having been a student myself, I realized what I was missing educationally through the general classroom setting and didn’t want to see that happen to others. My education and experience is acumen to my teaching. I want all to experience music, appropriately, at its finest. Moreover, lessons at Jennifer’s Violin Studio provide an opportunity to know firsthand the proper posture for violin playing, music theory, as well as the instructor’s undivided attention. The basic fundamentals to learn, play, and grow sufficiently. No one will be intellectually deprived nor left behind. No one is judged for asking a question. If I don’t know the answer I research to find the answer. I try to keep my rates reasonable for all to afford the opportunity to have private lessons and work with students who undergo financial hardships. My passion for music is a blessing as I never imagined being a teacher, privileged to meet wonderful people, and inspiring others. I consider students cherished friends if not family and always look out for them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The struggles I endured is what improved, and continues to improve, my business. I refuse to let a rotten apple spoil the bunch. Through humility you learn. Problems are not stop signs, they’re guidelines. I’ve learned from my students how to be a better teacher. Through these struggles with students is how I created the rules and contract for my business along with my policies and procedures. I’m about fairness and respect not only to the students, but also vendors, and my business. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Communication is key and detailed record keeping. Becoming an LLC protects my business, and me, and being trademarked maintains the integrity of my teaching tactics.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a violin teacher that teaches any one of any age how to play the violin and music theory. I also teach the basics of cello. I specialize in classical music using the Suzuki Method, but not solely keep to that genre. I like to maintain diversity in music. Per requests, I offer classical, country, fiddle, gospel, etc. If there is a song that has importance to you we can learn it. I’m known for being open to any and all possibilities with music. I have performed for the community and am honored that my students are welcome to participate. I am proud that the churches, rest homes, hospitals, and schools know that I, and the students, love to perform and provide entertainment and joy to them and others. Same is rewarding to my students as it reveals their accomplishments through the student’s hard work and the audiences support and appreciation. What sets me apart from the others is I am willing to teach starting at 4 years old and teach in the proper size. All sizes. I also teach all 10 volumes of Suzuki along with other materials. I also have internships with local symphonies and orchestras to broaden the students enrichment. I also play with my students. In regards to the aforementioned, it is my understanding that others don’t teach this way. Not teaching all the volumes makes teaching incomplete. Moreover, it is dangerous not to have a student with the correct size instrument as injuries could incur because the proper posture is compromised. I’m about thoroughness and detail for optimal performance. Even if a student’s intention is recreational, I teach with the mindset they want to go pro.
What’s next?
My plans are to continue to teach and grow in the process. I am currently making an album as well as writing a book. I have been asked to do the soundtrack for a virtual game. I have been invited to be a part of other musicians albums too and join in performances.
