Hidden Gems: Meet Yaz of Roxy’s Barkyard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yaz.

Hi Yaz, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I immigrated to the United States when I was 3 from France. Because the culture was so different, I struggled to do well in school and “fit in”. For a long time it plagued me, but as an adult I realize it’s actually those differences that made me an entrepreneur. I got my bachelor’s in Communications and Journalism at George Mason University but was never able to hold down a corporate job. So I bartended and served for years before I got my dog Roxy. Leaving her at home while I was at work made me feel so guilty that I started my business “Roxy’s Barkyard” the idea is, instead of being home she’s outside with her friends and your dog can join in on the fun too! Throughout the years I have developed a solid client base that I could not be more grateful for. I think what sets me apart is that I truly understand how much an owner loves their dog, and that’s the perspective I always see through when I am caring for them.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The paperwork was definitely something that overwhelmed me in the beginning, but step by step and form by form we eventually turned it into a fully operating and legit LLC.

Having to realize that some dogs might not fit well with our pack was also something that was challenging to navigate. How do I tell their owner that I might not be the best fit for them? It has definitely been a challenge upholding boundaries, but it’s a necessity for the safety and harmony of everyone involved.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Roxy’s Barkyard is a boutique home boarding and daycare located in the Northern Virginia area. We spend the majority of our days outdoors where the dogs swim, run and live their best lives! Then they get to come home and exist in a home environment. No kennels, and a small program with no more than 5 dogs at a time.

We thrive on mimicking home as best we can so that your pup can relax and enjoy their vacation! Low stress is our M.O.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
