Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Lindberg.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It started with a combat related injury that ended up retiring me from the military in 1993. At the time, I was told that I had a substantial amount of money that could be applied to college tuition that is really how it started.
My first job was as a senior substance abuse counselor. I noticed the strong correlation between family dysfunction and substance abuse and that started me on the path of systemic therapy.
I was not satisfied with the practice of therapy within agencies I worked. Over many months of sharing might dis-satisfaction with my wife, she boldly claimed one evening out of frustration “will then you have to build your own sandbox if you can’t play nice with others.” So, that was the start of my private practice in 2004.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest obstacle was the fact that I was a Yankee moving into Appalachia. Not only that, but I had the audacity to open a business when nobody knew my name; I didn’t have any kin in the area.
Perhaps it was an obstacle in a good way because, in Appalachia, to prove yourself you have to perform well. I am now the longest running private therapy practice, that I know of, in the twin counties and surrounding area.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We work with entire system. For example, if you’re having trouble and stress at work, we want to examine your environment, both at work and at home. If the problem is with the child, we want to know about school and extended relatives, friends, parenting, style, etc. We work with individuals, couples, family, children, and adolescent. We utilize play therapy along with our therapy art therapy pet assisted therapy. Many times we see the family at the same time; me seeing the parents while my play/art therapist sees the children.
We are best known for getting results when others have failed to achieve those results. We do this because our approach is systemic not linear. Think of it this way. Your car is loosing power, is it the fuel system, the ignition system, or carburetor? The car is a collection of systems and an individuals is too. We are also known for being incredibly laid-back. If you come in and feel like they’re at home instead of a doctor’s office, we are off to a good start.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Indiana during the 80s, so I was instilled with the strong work ethic that required integrity. Other than that, I played sports and was probably like most teenage boys in the late 70’s that had to find their own excitement, especially in Indiana.
