Rising Stars: Meet Michelle Redmon of Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Redmon.

Hi Michelle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My love for design started early, when I joined my high school yearbook staff. There was something about taking ideas, stories, and information and turning them into something visual that immediately clicked with me. Yearbook still holds a special place in my heart because it was really where my passion for design began. Years later, that passion came full circle when I won a design contest for the City of Annandale’s flag, a design that is still flying today.

That passion grew into a career spanning more than 15 years, working across nonprofits, associations, healthcare, government, military, and corporate organizations. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to build and refresh brands, develop visual communications for executives and organizations, design publications and large-scale documents, create event materials, and help bring ideas to life across both print and digital platforms.

For much of my career, I’ve been the person responsible for taking a project from the initial idea all the way through execution, working with stakeholders, developing the creative direction, managing timelines, and making sure the final product communicates effectively and looks its best. Every role and every project has taught me something new, not just about design, but about communication, leadership, collaboration, and how to continually grow.

That led me to launch Michelle Redmon Designs, where I provide graphic design and creative services to organizations that need thoughtful, strategic, and polished visual communications. I love that I get to combine creativity with problem-solving and help clients tell their stories visually.

Starting my own business has pushed me to grow in ways I never expected. Learning more about myself, understanding my strengths, and figuring out what I want my business to become has helped me evolve not only as a business owner, but also as a person. It’s been a journey of learning, adapting, and becoming more confident in who I am and the value I bring.

Today, I’m continuing to grow my business while taking on projects that allow me to do what I’ve always loved: create meaningful design, build strong brands, and turn ideas into something people can see, understand, and connect with. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, but I’m equally excited about continuing to learn, evolve, and see where the next chapter takes me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, and I think that’s part of what has made the journey so meaningful. One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to build and run a business while also continuing to grow as a creative professional. There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes that people don’t always see like finding clients, marketing myself, managing the business side, and learning how to balance everything.

There have also been moments of self-doubt and times when things didn’t work out the way I hoped. But I’ve learned not to view those experiences as failures. They’ve pushed me to learn more about myself, recognize my strengths, become more comfortable with the things I’m still learning, and be more intentional about the kind of work and clients I want to pursue.

The challenges have ultimately made me a stronger designer, a better business owner, and a more confident person. I’m still learning and evolving, but I’ve come to appreciate that building something of your own isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about being willing to keep going, keep learning, and keep growing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a graphic designer and creative director specializing in branding, visual communications, publication design, and creative strategy. Through Michelle Redmon Designs, I work with organizations to turn ideas, information, and stories into thoughtful, polished visuals that are not only visually appealing but purposeful and effective.

I have more than 15 years of experience working across nonprofits, associations, healthcare, government, military, and corporate environments. I particularly love projects that require me to take a lot of information and turn it into something organized, engaging, and easy to understand whether that’s a 100-page publication, a brand identity, an event experience, a campaign, or a complete visual system.

I’m known for being someone who can take a project from concept to completion. I’m comfortable working with stakeholders, developing creative direction, solving problems along the way, and making sure all the details come together. I’ve also spent much of my career as the primary or sole designer, so I’m used to being resourceful, taking ownership, and figuring things out when there isn’t a large creative team behind me.

What sets me apart is the combination of creativity, strategy, and practicality that I bring to my work. I don’t just want something to look good I want to understand the purpose behind it, who it needs to reach, and what it needs to accomplish. I genuinely care about the work I produce, and I think that shows in the level of thought, attention to detail, and ownership I bring to every project.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as growth, fulfillment, and knowing that I’m making a meaningful impact. For me, it’s not just about how much money I make or how big my business becomes. It’s about building something I’m proud of, doing work that I genuinely enjoy, and continuing to challenge myself to learn and grow.

Success also means having the freedom to be intentional about the work I take on and the people I work with, while creating something that provides value to others. As a business owner, I’m learning that success can look different at different stages. Sometimes it’s landing a new client or completing a project I’m really proud of, and sometimes it’s simply recognizing how much I’ve grown from where I started.

Ultimately, I think success is being able to look back and know that I kept moving forward, stayed true to myself, and built a life and career that feel meaningful to me.
