Today we’d like to introduce you to Kacper Lastowiecki.
Hi Kacper, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Most people never think about the air they breathe inside their own home, or the way light hits them at 7am and again at 7pm, or what is off-gassing from the materials in the walls around them. I think about all of it, constantly, because I have dedicated my architectural work around one idea: that a home should actively make you healthier.
My path here ran from the Chicago area, where I grew up, to architectural studies at the University of Illinois, then a Master of Architecture at Princeton, and several years at at a number of leading architecture firms in the midwest working across residential, multifamily, and commercial projects. Along the way I earned my WELL Accredited Professional credential alongside the usual AIA and licensure, and that WELL training reframed how I saw everything. Indoor air quality, low-VOC materials, circadian lighting, thermal comfort: these are not luxury add-ons. They are the difference between a house that looks good in photos and a home that genuinely supports the people inside it.
So in 2025 I started KLPOA in Arlington to do exactly that kind of work, one home at a time, for clients across DC and Northern Virginia. I keep the firm small and stay personally involved in every project, because wellness-centered design lives in the details, and details are not something you delegate.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There’s always challenges when starting a business, especially one as demanding as architecture. However, I truly love what I do, and I’ve been blessed to work with really incredible clients who share my vision and are passionate about wellness-centered architecture. Therefore, although sometimes there are challenges with balancing design, wellness, and the day-to-day demands of running a small business, I wouldn’t change a thing.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Kacper Lastowiecki Practice of Architecture (KLPOA)?
The homes we live in have a huge impact on our day-to-day health and wellbeing. When we buy, build, or renovate a home, we are actually making one of the most important health decisions of our lives, and one that will impact us for years to come. While many architects will say they care about health and wellness, rarely can they prove it.
I’m not just a licensed architecture but also a WELL Accredited Professional, which means I have dedicated significant time and effort into learning the latest health science and research on what moves the needle on health and wellness in residential architecture. In a field that’s often filled with hype and vibes, it’s nice to work with a professional whose judgment is backed by evidence and rigorous science. More importantly, when you work with me, you know that the entire design from start to finish is considered in light of your wellness, and “healthy features” are not just added in at the end or as an afterthought.
And most importantly, when you work with me, you actually work with me. I keep KLPOA deliberately small and take on only a handful of exceptional homes a year, and I personally lead every one from the first conversation through the final walkthrough. There is no handoff to a junior team, no point where your project becomes someone else’s to figure out. When you hire KLPOA, you get me, start to finish.
Any big plans?
My goal is always to provide the highest level of service and design for our clients, no matter how large or small their project may be. I have been doing that since I began the practice, and I have every intention of continuing to do that. I expect that in the coming years a number of the projects that we’re currently working on will be built (designing a healthy home doesn’t happen overnight…) and clients and their families will enjoy them well into the future!
