Hi Patrick , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Onyx Auto Towing started from a simple idea: I wanted to build a towing company that felt more professional, transparent, and customer-focused than what people typically expect from the industry.
Before starting Onyx, I spent many years working in sales, customer service, and operations. Those experiences taught me how important communication, reliability, and the overall customer experience really are. When I entered the towing industry, I saw an opportunity to apply those same principles to a business where customers are often calling during stressful situations.
I started Onyx Auto Towing in Fairfax, Virginia, with one truck and a very hands-on approach. In the beginning, I handled everything myself — answering calls, dispatching, driving the truck, working with customers, building the website, managing advertising, and developing relationships with local businesses.
From the start, I wanted Onyx to be more than just another tow truck company. We focused on clear pricing, professional service, clean equipment, fast communication, and treating every customer with respect. A lot of our growth has come from word of mouth and customer reviews, which has been extremely rewarding because it means people remember the way they were treated.
Building the business has definitely come with challenges. Towing is a competitive industry, operating costs are high, and no two days are the same. There have been long hours, slow days, difficult recoveries, and plenty of lessons learned along the way. But those challenges have also helped shape the company and pushed me to think differently about how a towing business can operate.
Today, Onyx Auto Towing continues to serve Fairfax and the Northern Virginia area with towing, roadside assistance, accident recovery, vehicle transport, and both light- and medium-duty services. I’m also very interested in using technology to improve the towing experience, from better dispatching and communication to easier quoting and customer tracking.
My goal has always been to build something with a strong reputation and a recognizable brand — not simply operate a tow truck. We are still growing, still learning, and still improving, but I’m proud of how far Onyx has come and excited about where we can take it next.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Towing is a very competitive industry, and operating costs like insurance, fuel, equipment, repairs, and advertising can add up quickly.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to grow responsibly while maintaining good service. Starting with one truck meant long hours, handling multiple roles, and sometimes having to turn down work when demand was too high.
There have also been lessons around marketing, staffing, and building the right partnerships. Every challenge has helped me improve the business and become more disciplined about how Onyx grows.

For me, the best networking has come from simply building real relationships. I try to connect with other business owners, people in the automotive industry, and professionals who have experience in areas I’m still learning.
I think the key is to ask good questions, stay open-minded, and learn from people who have already been through the challenges you’re facing. Networking works best when it’s genuine and not just about asking what someone can do for you.
