Inspiring Conversations with Kimberly Lewis of blacksburg functional medicine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Lewis.

Hi Kimberly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Dr. Kimberly Lewis has never taken a conventional path through life—or medicine. A world traveler who has lived and practiced in the United States, Ireland, and Peru, she eventually chose Blacksburg and the New River Valley as home, captivated by the mountains, natural beauty, and wonderful sense of community. Outside the office, her interests are just as colorful: she is an artist, an orchid enthusiast, practices Turkish dance, and is an avid medieval reenactor. She loves history, culture, travel, nature, and sharing adventures with her husband.

Dr. Lewis has spent more than 25 years in healthcare and has devoted years to advanced training in functional medicine. A Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, she received an Excellence Award from Functional Medicine University and continues to study the evolving science of health and healing. Her approach blends science-based natural medicine, advanced laboratory testing, nutrition, and mind-body medicine. She loves investigating the “why” behind chronic health problems and helping people understand the connections between the different systems of the body.

At Blacksburg Functional Medicine, Dr. Lewis sees people with a wide range of health concerns, including digestive, hormonal, metabolic, autoimmune, neurological, and complex chronic conditions, as well as patients seeking integrative support during cancer care. Teaching is also an important part of her work, whether she is lecturing to a group or sitting one-on-one with a patient. From science and medicine to art, orchids, dance, travel, and medieval history, curiosity has always been at the center of Dr. Lewis’s life—and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
And a cancer survivor and some of this actually a lot of what I do is based upon understanding what kinds of stress cause cancer in the body The same stresses that cause cancer in the body cause autoimmune and a lot of other problems A lot of other medical problems Blood sugar Heart disease Autoimmune

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Blacksburg Functional Medicine was created for people who want to understand *why* they don’t feel well—not simply manage another symptom. I specialize in complex and chronic health concerns, including autoimmune conditions, digestive problems, hormone and metabolic issues, neurological concerns, fatigue, and supportive functional medicine care for people facing cancer. Many of my patients come to me after years of searching for answers or because they want a more comprehensive, science-based approach to their health.

What sets my practice apart is the time and detective work that goes into each person. Functional medicine looks at the body as an interconnected system rather than a collection of separate parts. I use detailed histories and advanced laboratory testing to look for patterns involving the gut, immune system, hormones, nutrition, inflammation, metabolism, and other factors that may be contributing to a person’s health concerns. From there, we develop an individualized plan that may incorporate nutrition, targeted supplementation, lifestyle changes, natural medicine, and mind-body approaches.

What I am most proud of is that Blacksburg Functional Medicine is both highly personalized and deeply rooted in education. I want patients to understand their bodies, their test results, and the reasoning behind their plan. My goal is not to create dependence on a practitioner; it is to give people knowledge and practical tools they can use to become active participants in their own health. I want readers to know that there is a place in the New River Valley where they can bring the complicated questions, be heard, and have someone willing to dig deeper.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is floating down the Rock River with my friends. I was raised in the farmland of Illinois and this creates people with hard work ethic but there’s not much to do out there. Floating down the river with my friends in the summer is a memory of joy and relaxation!
