Conversations with Neema

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neema.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Elysian Events really started with two friends, a shared love for creativity, and a genuine excitement for bringing people together.

We’re Neema and Shanima, co-founders of Elysian Events. Long before Elysian became a business, we were the people who loved getting involved in celebrations—coming up with ideas, styling spaces, paying attention to the little details, and finding ways to make an occasion feel extra special. Somewhere along the way, we realized that what came naturally to us could become something much more.

For Neema, creativity had always been a big part of life. With a background in design, there was a natural love for visual storytelling, colors, details, and transforming a space. Together, we found that our strengths complemented each other, and that combination became the foundation for Elysian Events.

We started small, like many businesses do. We took opportunities as they came, learned with every event, built relationships with local vendors, and slowly began creating a name for ourselves. Much of our growth has happened organically—one celebration leading to another, referrals from past clients, and families coming back to us for their next milestone.

Over time, Elysian has grown into much more than décor. Today, we help our clients with everything from event design and styling to planning, vendor coordination, rentals, entertainment, timelines, and day-of execution. We’ve had the opportunity to be part of weddings, receptions, engagements, birthdays, baby showers, anniversaries, community celebrations, and so many meaningful family milestones throughout Richmond and beyond.

One thing we have never wanted Elysian to become is a business where every event looks the same. We love getting to know our clients, understanding what they envision, and then finding a way to make it feel uniquely theirs. Sometimes a client comes to us with an entire Pinterest board, and sometimes they come with just a color or a feeling. We love both.

Of course, building a business while balancing our families, careers, and everyday life has come with plenty of challenges. There have been late nights, last-minute changes, long setup days, and a lot of learning along the way. But there is something incredibly rewarding about standing in a completely transformed space just before the guests arrive and remembering that it all started as an idea and a conversation.

And then there’s our favorite moment—the client walking in and seeing everything for the first time. That reaction never gets old.

We’re incredibly grateful for every family who has trusted us with their celebrations, every vendor who has worked alongside us, and every person who has recommended our name to someone else. Those relationships are a huge part of how Elysian has grown.

We still feel like our story is just beginning. We have bigger ideas, bigger dreams, and so much more that we want to create. But no matter how much Elysian Events grows, we want to hold on to what started it all: two friends, a love for creating beautiful experiences, and the belief that life’s special moments deserve to be celebrated beautifully.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road, but we think that’s true of anything you build from the ground up.

One of our biggest challenges has been balancing Elysian Events with everything else in our lives. We are business owners, but we are also mothers, wives, and working professionals. Event planning doesn’t always fit neatly into a nine-to-five schedule. There are late-night client conversations, early-morning setups, long event days, last-minute changes, and weekends spent working while everyone else is celebrating. Learning how to balance all of those roles has probably been one of our biggest learning experiences.

Another challenge has been learning the business side of a creative industry. We started Elysian because we genuinely loved designing and creating events, but very quickly realized that running an event company involves so much more than creativity. There are budgets, contracts, logistics, vendor relationships, staffing, timelines, transportation, inventory, and countless details happening behind the scenes. A beautiful event may look effortless when guests walk in, but getting it to that point takes an incredible amount of planning and coordination.

We’ve also had to learn that things will not always go according to plan. Weather changes, deliveries get delayed, vendors run late, clients change their minds, and unexpected situations can happen even after months of preparation. Over time, we’ve become much better at staying calm, adapting quickly, and finding solutions without allowing those challenges to affect the client’s experience.

Growing the business itself has also required patience. When you’re starting out, you want to say yes to every opportunity and prove what you’re capable of. As we’ve grown, we’ve learned the importance of understanding our value, setting boundaries, choosing the right projects, and creating processes that allow us to deliver the level of service we want Elysian to be known for.

But we’re grateful for those challenges because they have shaped the way we work today. Every difficult setup, unexpected change, long night, and lesson learned has made us more confident and resourceful. We’re still learning with every event, and we actually hope that never stops. For us, growth has never meant having everything figured out—it has meant becoming better with every experience.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We’re the co-founders of Elysian Events, and what we really love is taking someone’s vision and turning it into an experience that feels completely personal to them.
We specialize in event planning, design, décor, and coordination for weddings, receptions, birthdays, showers, anniversaries, and other special celebrations. We can be involved from the very beginning—helping develop the concept and finding vendors—or come in specifically for design, décor, or coordination.
I come from a design background, so the creative side has always been very natural to me. But over the years, we’ve realized that what makes a great event isn’t just how beautiful it looks. There is so much happening behind the scenes—timelines, vendors, rentals, logistics, last-minute changes—and we’ve become equally passionate about making that part run smoothly.
I think what sets us apart is that we genuinely try to understand each client before we start designing. We don’t want every Elysian event to have the same recognizable look. We want someone to walk into the room and feel like, “This is so us.”
What we’re most proud of is how much of our growth has come through word of mouth. When someone trusts us with one of the most important days in their life and then recommends us to another family—or comes back to us for another celebration—that is probably the biggest compliment we can receive.
At the end of the day, we want our clients to enjoy their event rather than spend the entire time worrying about the details. If they can walk in, see their vision brought to life, and actually be present for their celebration, we feel like we’ve done our job.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m definitely more of a visual person than a reader. Pinterest and Instagram are probably my biggest sources of creative inspiration. I love seeing new trends, color combinations, fashion, interiors, and interesting ways of styling spaces. Canva is another tool we use constantly for Elysian, from mood boards and design concepts to marketing.

And outside of work, my way of switching off is honestly binge-watching a good show! With work, events, and family life, sometimes that’s exactly the reset I need.
I also think a lot of our inspiration comes from everyday life—travel, fashion, a beautiful restaurant or space, flowers, or even something completely unexpected.

As creatives, we’re always noticing little details and thinking, “How could we turn that into an event?”
