Today we’d like to introduce you to Zakiyyah Shabazz.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was inspired to pursue a career in beauty when my aunt did my hair as a child. I started braiding my friends’ hair at 14, and then got my cosmetology license at 18 when I graduated high school.
From there, I worked in a couple of salons, but I didn’t quite find my niche until I started working for European Wax Center in 2021. Doing hair was a lot on my body and very time-consuming, so when I started waxing, I loved it. I loved being able to help people with their skin while not feeling completely drained at the end of the day.
I left my corporate waxing job in 2023 to start my solo career with a coworker I had met, who is now my best friend. From there, I’ve continued to expand my treatments and grow my business. My most popular services are Brow Laminations, Brow Tinting, and Intimate Area Facials.
My dream is to continue expanding my education and services to offer corrective skin treatments and restorative feminine wellness resources. I’m excited to keep growing, learning, and creating a space where I can help people feel confident, cared for, and comfortable in their skin.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. I moved back in with my mom, passed up opportunities to move, let go of friends, and let go of past versions of myself. I still make hard decisions and question whether this is what I should be doing. Yet consistently, everything I put into my business is fruitful, even when the fruit is a lesson.
Who I have become in order to operate a business is remarkable. The habits I’ve formed to expand and evolve my business have also helped me evolve as a person.
I believe my main struggle is compartmentalizing my personal and business life because my work is very intimate. I’ve waxed people through pregnancy, heartbreak, grief, and financial hardship. It’s something I’m becoming more intentional about, but I’m also grateful that I can be a safe space for people in my community.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Sanity Beauty, I do my best to aid in skin wellness and healing. What we see on the skin’s surface is simply a reaction to something much deeper. As service providers, we can tell when a client is dehydrated, stressed, hormonal, inflamed, pregnant, taking care of their skin, or not taking care of their skin. Everything is connected.
This is a mantra that I use in my business. I truly believe what keeps people coming back to me is the interconnectedness that shines through the core of my business in the form of knowledge, resources, and safe spaces.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My family, loved ones, clients, and my business partner and best friend, Jalyn.
